Squid Game Season 2’s Most Emotional Scene Prompts Tears From Stars

Squid Game Season 2’s Most Emotional Scene Prompts Tears From Stars

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Squid Game season 2.

Squid Game actors Kang Ae-shim and Yang Dong-geun have an emotional reaction to watching a scene between their characters in season 2. They play two of Squid Game season 2’s new characters, Jang Geum-ja and Park Yong-sik, a mother and son who find themselves in the games together due to the debts from Yong-sik’s gambling. The scene that they watch and react to is when Geum-ja and Yong-sik reunite after being separated during a round of the Mingle game.

In a Netflix reaction video, Yang and Kang tearfully react while watching the reunion scene between Yong-sik and Geum-ja. Yang covers his face while Kang remarks that she needs tissues due to her tears. Kang explains how when filming the scene, and when rewatching it, she thinks about the son she has in real life, and what it would be like to be in this situation with her real son. Yang reveals that he almost turned down the role of Yong-sik because of this specific scene. Check out their comments below:

Yang Dong-geun: No, we can’t watch this… I’m going to hide my face. I wanted to watch this scene alone. And now they’re filming me watching the scene.

Kang Ae-shim: Please give me some tissues. I’m crying without even realizing it. I have a son too, so I thought to myself how I would have felt if this was actually happening to me. Once I started acting the scene, I just couldn’t control myself. It still makes me sad to think about it.

Yang Dong-geun: That scene is actually the reason I almost turned down the role. I think it’s a scene that I personally didn’t really wish to confront. In my own life, I never get to say sorry to my mom, nor does it ever really feel like the right situation to apologize. So, from weeks before…I was almost feeling sick, thinking about the scene. I think I wanted to take the emotions that are hard for me to express to my mom in reality and convey them through my lines while acting the scene.

What This Means For Squid Game

It Is A Powerful Scene That Sets The Stage For An Even More Devastating Season 3

The reunion between Yong-sik and Geum-ja was already one of Squid Game season 2’s best scenes, and it is now further elevated when seeing the actors’ genuinely emotional responses to the scene. Seeing a mother and son having to play the games together was one of the major ways that season 2 distinguished itself from season 1. The stakes are arguably even higher for Yong-sik and Geum-ja than for other players who only have to worry about themselves.

Cho Hyun-ju is the standout character of Squid Game season 2 as she consistently steals the show with her compassion, bravery, and skill.

In this specific scene, it is a relief for Yong-sik and Geum-ja to reunite, and for them both to still be alive by the end of Squid Game season 2. However, it seems unlikely that both will survive the events of season 3. There are still more games to play, the number of survivors is quickly dwindling, and the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) will be sure to torment every ally and sympathizer to Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) to prove that he is right about humanity’s worst tendencies.

They Are Both Phenomenal Actors

As excited as I am about Squid Game season 3’s story, I am also dreading the likelihood of seeing Yong-sik or Geum-ja die. If seeing them reunite after surviving is this emotional, seeing one or both of them die will be even more devastating. One benefit of having the current story split over the course of two seasons is that season 2 provided time to get invested in new characters like Yong-sik and Geum-ja, making their return and eventual fates in Squid Game season 3 all the more impactful.
