The Chosen Season 5 Sets A Box Office Record For The Faith-Based Franchise As TV Show Continues Theatrical Success

This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.

New episodes of The Chosen have broken a box office record for the faith-based series. The ongoing show has brought the story of Jesus (Jonathan Roumie) to life since 2017. In addition to having various streaming homes, the series has regularly made its way to the big screen after Fathom Events put out the special Christmas with The Chosen following season 2. The latest theatrical outing is the first two episodes of The Chosen season 5, which were released as Last Supper – Part 1 and will be followed by the next three episodes as Part 2 on April 4.

Per Deadline, as of Sunday morning, The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 1 is projected to earn a 3-day total of $11.5 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend. This sees it debuting at No. 3 at the domestic box office, falling behind only the sophomore weekend of Snow White ($14.2 million) and the debut of the Jason Statham action movie A Working Man ($15.2 million).

It is by far the best debut for any theatrical release of the series, pulling ahead of the previous record-holder, which was 2022’s The Chosen Season 3: Episodes 1 & 2, which opened to $8.8 million.

What This Means For The Chosen

The Last Supper – Part 1 Is Competing At A Major Level

The biblical drama The Chosen has not only succeeded in theaters but continued to grow, as this new record shows. It seems that the decision to title the presentation Last Supper in honor of its narrative content may have helped, as the release debuted during the lead-up to Easter, when the story is most relevant. However, each season premiere has performed well in theaters regardless of its title, with season 4 debuting to nearly $6 million in 2024. Below, see a breakdown of how it compares to the show’s previous theatrical outings:

Title

Opening Weekend

Total Box Office

Christmas with the Chosen: The Messengers (2021)

$4.2 million

$13.4 million

The Chosen Season 3: Episodes 1 & 2 (2022)

$8.8 million

$14.7 million

The Chosen Season 3 Finale (2023)

$3.6 million

$5.6 million

The Chosen: Season 4 Episodes 1-3 (2024)

$5.9 million

$14.9 million

The Chosen: Season 4 Episodes 4-6 (2024)

$3.6 million

$9.5 million

The Chosen: Season 4 Episodes 7-8 (2024)

$3.3 million

$7.7 million

The Chosen: Last Supper — Part 1 (2025)

$11.5 million

TBD

If The Last Supper – Part 1 continues on the trajectory implied by the performance of previous theatrical exhibitions of The Chosen, it could very well end its theatrical run with an overall gross of $24.2 million or more, which would make it the highest-grossing installment by a wide margin. In fact, that total would outgross the three lowest-earning episode packages put together. It would also outgross many notable non-faith-based titles from recent years, including 2024’s The Crow ($24.1 million) and 2023’s Saltburn ($21 million).
