A new trailer for The Last of Us season 2 teases huge repercussions for Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey). The post-apocalyptic HBO series is based on the video game franchise of the same name and takes place in a world where civilization is limited to small pockets of survivors who are under siege by zombie-like humans infected by the parasitic fungus Cordyceps. The Last of Us season 2 will pick up in Jackson, Wyoming after Joel lied to Ellie about killing the community of Fireflies who were planning to remove Ellie’s brain to try and develop a cure.
HBO has now shared a new full-length trailer for The Last Of Us season 2. The trailer opens with a scene of Ellie and Joel walking through the woods, hearkening back to their season 1 dynamic before further footage expands their world and the number of characters around them even more. Their life in Jackson is depicted with brief glimpses of Ellie dancing with Dina and Joel teaching a young child how to read a map. After Joel asks what is outside the wall of town and the kid responds by saying “monsters,” the trailer cuts to more action-packed footage.
This footage includes a gun-toting Ellie, a clicker emerging from the snow, and an attack on Jackson that topples Joel and Ellie’s world yet again. The trailer also offers glimpses at some of the new characters who will be part of season 2, reveals shots of Ellie sharing a romantic kiss and a flamethrower being used against a hulking menace, and concludes with a pair of scenes implying that Ellie has learned the truth about Joel, ending on a shot of her looking distraught and saying, “you swore.” See the full trailer below:
What This Means For The Last Of Us Season 2
The World Is Getting Bigger
One major element of the new trailer is the fact that the The Last of Us cast is expanding considerably as the show sets off to flesh out more of the world of post-apocalyptic America and brings additional characters into Joel and Ellie’s orbit. This includes Alien: Romulus‘ Isabela Merced as Dina, Kaitlyn Dever as the vengeful Firefly Abby, Young Mazino as Dina’s ex Jesse, Tati Gabrielle as medic Nora, Jeffrey Wright as militia leader Isaac Dixon, Danny Ramirez as upbeat soldier Manny, and Catherine O’Hara as an as-yet unnamed character who is a therapist for Joel.
Tati Gabrielle’s Nora is seen talking with Ellie in the trailer during a scene that may be the catalyst for Ellie discovering Joel’s secret.
However, by beginning and ending where it does, the Last of Us trailer also reminds viewers that the core of the show is the relationship between Joel and Ellie, even as it is seemingly about to splinter. The dynamic between the characters, who grew close over the course of their adventure in season 1, provides the emotional core of the series, even as the stakes in the apocalypse become even higher and more and more characters with complicated personalities join the ensemble.
Our Take On The Last Of Us Season 2 Trailer
It Could Live Up To Season 1
This new trailer also highlights the fact that season 2 will continue the show’s tradition of bringing events and characters from the original games to the screen while still offering original characters and storylines that make the series feel like an expansion of the source material. If the season lives up to the promise of the trailer, the show could potentially follow up on the explosive The Last of Us season 1 ending with aplomb.
The Last of Us season 2 premieres on HBO on April 13, followed by weekly episodes every Sunday.
