The Penguin Season 2 Gets Disappointing Update From Warner Bros. Television Executive

Warner Bros. executive confirms that while The Penguin season 2 isn’t in the works, a direct continuation of the DC series is certainly a possibility. Lauren LeFranc’s The Penguin served as the second installment in Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise, but also as a standalone dive into one of the most famous yet most overlooked members of Batman’s rogue gallery. The Penguin took home three Golden Globes, record-breaking audience stats, and raving reviews. The Penguin‘s finale also teased Oz Cobb’s next encounter with Robert Pattinson’s Batman, which will take place in Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II, set to release in October 2027.

In an interview with Deadline, Warner Bros.Television Group CEO Channing Dungey delivers an update on a possible continuation to The Penguin, stating that The Penguin was never meant to extend past a single season. However, Dungey confirms that “everyone is interested” in coming back “and doing more” in spite of the fact that “there’s nothing in the works at the moment.” Dungey also says that revisiting The Penguin is “definitely a possibility” if Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti, and the rest of the team are available, though nothing is currently confirmed. Read Channing Dungey’s full comments:

“The Penguin is one of those things where — and it’s interesting, because when you talk with everyone involved, everyone is interested in possibly revisiting those characters and doing more — it was very much designed as a limited series. But I would never say never. I think if we can get the creative stars to line up in the right way, and the talent is available — because we certainly wouldn’t want to do this without Colin [Farrell] and Cristin [Milioti] and that team — I would say it’s definitely a possibility, but there’s nothing in the works at the moment.”

The Penguin Season 2 Is Possible, But Could Take A While

As Channing Dungey, Lauren LeFranc, and Matt Reeves have stated multiple times, The Penguin was always intended to be a limited series. However, The Penguin‘s extremely high quality, massive popularity, and its connection to an expanding franchise open up countless possibilities for a second season. Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb made major sacrifices but is currently free and aiming for bigger goals in Gotham City’s criminal underworld, and Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Gigante is in prison but still willing to fulfill her full potential as an independent mob boss.

I’ve Changed My Mind, I’m Glad The Penguin Showrunner Debunked The Theory That Theo Rossi’s Dr Julian Rush Is Actually Scarecrow

The Penguin’s showrunner refuted claims that Julian Rush is the Scarecrow of Matt Reeves’ Batman franchise, and I think this is a good thing.

Colin Farrell is reportedly being eyed for the titular role in the DCU’s Sgt. Rock movie, and Matt Reeves is currently working on the repeatedly delayed The Batman – Part II. Therefore, it may take more than three years for The Penguin season 2 to be greenlit and filmed, and from four to five years at the earliest to arrive on streaming. By then, the Penguin’s story must have progressed in The Batman – Part II, which will be a key installment for every character in Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe.

The Penguin Season 2 Is Warner Bros’ Best Choice For The Batman’s Next TV Project

Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II has struggled to get off the ground, and the DCU’s The Brave and the Bold will certainly take attention away from Reeves’ Elseworlds franchise in the future. Hence, The Batman is unlikely to spawn new spinoffs based on other characters. However, The Penguin‘s massive success almost guarantees a similar second season. Although The Penguin was originally devised as a limited series, there’s plenty of material The Penguin season 2 can cover, especially after The Batman – Part II shakes up Gotham City in 2027.
