There Was A Mark To Hit

There Was A Mark To Hit

The leading star of Young Sherlock discusses the pressure of playing a younger version of Sherlock Holmes. The upcoming Prime Video television series, based on Andy Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes novels, has tapped Hero Fiennes Tiffin to portray the 19-year-old Sherlock. Guy Ritchie, who has previously directed two Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, is attached as a director and executive producer.

In an interview with Collider, Tiffin talks about the pressure of playing the titular detective. The actor shares that he has been a Sherlock fan since childhood, so he understands the expectations and judgments that come with the role. Tiffin further explains that he feels like “there was a mark to hit,” but he places his trust in Ritchie, who he praises for being decisive and direct. Check out what Tiffin had to say below:

Because I’ve grown up loving Sherlock, so I appreciate if anyone does another one, I’ll watch it and I’ll be the kind of person that goes, “I think Sherlock might have been a bit different.” So, I understood the pressure because I’d be on the other side too if it was someone else playing the role.

But working with Guy, he’s so decisive and so good at what he does, it’s easy to trust him. From day one, he’d be saying, “Do it like this, or do it like that.” He could be quite direct with his direction, which I really like.

There were those nerves, but it was excitement too, and an honor and privilege to play the character. But you’re right. I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I felt some sort of responsibility. I felt like there was a mark to hit. You can’t just say it’s a completely fabricated character. He is how he is. People are going to have an idea of an expectation they have. And I don’t think there’s a better man for the job than Guy. I just trusted him so much. It was a pleasure. I’m really, really excited for people to see what we’ve done.

The Bar Is High

The iconic detective has been adapted and re-imagined many times. Much like James Bond, many actors have brought their iterations of Sherlock Holmes to life, including Downey Jr. in Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movies, and Henry Cavill, who plays the character in the Enola Holmes franchise. Benedict Cumberbatch also brought one of the best versions of Sherlock to life in the BBC series. The bar for playing Sherlock Holmes has been set high by those actors.
