What You Need to Know

A new Pokémon anime short has just been announced, and it’s coming from the studio who animated the hit film Your Name. The new anime is set for release on Pokémon Day later this month.

The new anime short is entitled “Dragonite and the Postman,” and will be releasing on February 27th, which fans will know as the yearly Pokémon Day celebration. Produced by CoMix Wave Films, who are also responsible for Suzume and 5 Centimeters Per Second, the anime is set to focus on a young girl named Hana, who has befriended the local Dragonite postman. It’s not yet known how long the short will be, but it is set to be released on YouTube at present. While only a key visual has been released so far, the image it presents is a charming shot of Dragonite in the skies above Paldea.

The New Pokémon Day Short Tells a Sweet Story

The Short Tells a Story of Family Love

According to Natalie Comics, the short will follow Hana as she attempts to help Dragonite deliver a letter with no name or address attached. Hana, accompanied by her Fuecoco, eventually tracks down the sender, a boy named Rio, who sent the letter to his father, who is in Kanto, for his birthday. However, the father’s birthday happens to be on that particular day, giving Hana, Rio, and Dragonite very little time to actually deliver the letter before it’s too late.

Pokémon’s New Anime Is Already Heading for Its Finale: Here Is What You Need to Know

Pokémon Horizons is moving into its endgame after a dramatic showdown that achieved a main character’s dream. Here’s what we know about the ending.

The idea of the mailman Dragonite is an old one, going all the way back to the first Pokémon movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back, where a Dragonite with a messenger bag was shown delivering a letter to Ash. Since then, the postman Dragonite has appeared in TCG cards and other promotional materials, and now it seems he’ll be getting a special anime dedicated to him. Since Dragonite are said to be able to fly around the world in just a few hours, they make perfect sense to use to deliver mail, although their rarity might make obtaining a large number of them difficult.

A Pokémon Movie By Your Name’s Studio Could Be Beautiful

The Studio’s Reputation Could Mean A Lot

Pokémon has had many studios work on anime shorts before, but CoMix Wave Films definitely stands out among the group. The studio’s works with Makoto Shinkai have had tremendous critical and financial success, after all, and that’s due in no small part to the amazing animation that they’re able to put out. Pokémon may truly end up looking more amazing than anyone every expected possible.

While a full series by the studio would be nice, the short is an excellent way to show what they can do with a well-known franchise. With only the key visual to go on, the style is certainly quite nice, and it will no doubt look even more impressive in motion. Thankfully, February 27th isn’t too far away, so Pokémon fans won’t have to wait long to see the new anime short for themselves.
