Why Dexter Will Try To Reconnect With Harrison After He Tried To Kill His Father Explained By Resurrection Creator & Star

Despite Harrison (Jack Alcott) having almost made Dexter his own murder victim, Michael C. Hall and showrunner Clyde Phillips explain why the killer is now invested in tracking down and potentially reconnecting with his son in Dexter: Resurrection. The upcoming sequel series picks up after the events of Dexter: New Blood and interludes in Dexter: Original Sin, as the titular serial killer must contend with evading the authorities and finding his missing son. Alongside Hall and Alcott, Dexter: Resurrection‘s cast will feature the return of David Zayas, James Remar, and John Lithgow.

Hall and Phillips opened up to Vanity Fair about how Dexter’s second chance at life will see him try to reconnect with his son. Despite urging Harrison to take his life and put an end to his crimes, Dexter is partially drawn to reconnecting with his son due to how he helps the serial killer see his better, more human side, though despite this goal, Dexter is unsure about whether being in Harrison’s life is healthy for him. Check out Hall and Phillips’ full explanation below:

Michael C. Hall: Dexter has a lot of hesitation about making contact, which is a fundamental part of the tension that is pervasive for the first bit of the season. Harrison revealed himself to be, and remains, an all-the-more potent connection to Dexter’s tiny sense of humanity. He craves it, in spite of himself, so it’s a major bolt of thread running through his interior life and the life of the season.

Clyde Phillips: Dexter finds Harrison fairly quickly, then he asks Harry, “Do I reveal myself to him? Is it going to screw him up to have a zombie dad?” Dexter is determined to make sure that he has a solid—and more importantly honest and loving—relationship with his son.

What This Means For Dexter: Resurrection

The Serial Killer May Be Left Without A Choice In Reconnecting With His Son

It is hard to deny that Dexter’s presence in his son’s life has been anything but healthy for the 16-year-old. While he has always done his best to spare Harrison from enduring his own bloody childhood like he did and became a better man due to this bond, fate had other ideas, and ultimately Dexter saw that the better option may be to stay out of Harrison’s life. However, as Harrison showed signs of his own “Dark Passenger,” Dexter tried to aid his son through the experience but came to the conclusion that Harrison must kill him to be free.

Every Dexter Show, Ranked

The Dexter franchise has grown to include four different shows – with a fifth on the way – in 20 years, but only one of them can be called the best.

However, with Hall confirming that Dexter will find his son early on in Dexter: Resurrection‘s run, many may wonder just what conditions will bring either one of them back into the other’s life. With Harrison established as being missing, it is possible that Dexter may be brought into his son’s life in order to rescue him, despite his hesitation. However, a chilling possibility may be that Dexter’s gambit failed in freeing Harrison and only encouraged his darker side, meaning the only way to truly heal is by reconnecting and working together, or Dexter being forced to make a horrific choice.

Our Take On Dexter And Harrison’s Potential Reunion

Could Dexter’s Family Pull Him From The Darkness?

Dexter: Resurrection will mark the return of three generations of the Morgan family, as Remar joins the cast of the Dexter spinoff to reprise his role of Harry Morgan. It is currently unclear what Harry’s remanifestation means for Dexter’s mental state, as he has let go of the image of his father that grew to represent his conscience as his guide in season 8. With both his manifestations of his father and him seeing how his son reawakens a more human side to him, perhaps all three Morgan family generations could help Dexter finally quell his darker half for good.
