Showrunner Jeff Trammell explains why Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man‘s Lonnie Lincoln is a perfect parallel to Peter Parker in the MCU’s animated Spider-Man show. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man‘s cast of characters shakes up Peter Parker’s usual allies and enemies, with the introduction of animated variants of Marvel characters such as Daredevil, Norman Osborn, and Doctor Strange himself. Instead of the traditional friend combo of Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy or Mary Jane Watson, or the MCU combo of Ned Leeds and MJ, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man‘s Peter Parker two closest friends are Nico Minoru and Lonnie Lincoln.

In a D23 interview, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man showrunner Jeff Trammell addressed the similarities between Hudson Thames’ Peter Parker and Eugene Byrd’s Lonnie Lincoln. Trammell reveals that an early version of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man had “Peter and Lonnie were on completely opposite ends,” but taking both characters “on similar journeys” proved more interesting for the animated show. Trammell also highlights how Peter and Lonnie care too much about what they do, though their different journeys will take them to very different fates. Read Jeff Trammell’s full comments below:

“There was an early version of the show where Peter and Lonnie were on completely opposite ends. As time went on, I thought, ‘I don’t know if that’s fun. Let’s try putting Peter and Lonnie together and seeing how they complement each other.’”

“Peter and Lonnie share a lot of really cool personality traits, but they’re also very different. Being able to juxtapose those characters as we take them on similar journeys with different obstacles is something I was really interested in exploring.”

“Lonnie has so much history in the comics, but there is so much more to explore with him onscreen,” Trammell said. “That was what really drew me to him. Peter is going through growing pains, and he cares so much, and Lonnie is doing the same. Lonnie has a huge heart, and so he does what he feels is necessary given the circumstances. At the end of the day, he cares too much—to a fault. Peter is like that, too. They’re both intrinsically people who want to help but are taken on different journeys throughout the course of this show.”
