2M Monsterverse Sequel Climbing Netflix Charts After Changing Streaming Homes

A movie from the Monsterverse has found new success on streaming after changing platforms. The Hollywood franchise blends characters and scenarios from two of the most famous and longest-running monster franchises in history. The first is Godzilla, a Japanese kaiju franchise following the various rampages of a giant irradiated lizard that kicked off in 1954 and now includes more than 30 films, and the second is King Kong, an American franchise which began in 1933 and follows an oversized ape whose rage is usually triggered when he is being exploited by humans.

The Monsterverse, which is produced by Legendary Pictures, brings King Kong, Godzilla, and a variety of other kaiju from the Godzilla movies including Mothra, King Ghidorah, and Rodan into the same universe. The franchise kicked off with Godzilla in 2014, followed by Kong: Skull Island in 2017 and now encompasses five movies and two television shows, with more on the way. All together, Monsterverse movies have grossed nearly $2.5 billion at the worldwide box office.
