Jason Statham Action Sequel That Divided Critics & Audiences Becomes A Streaming Hit


Jason Statham has made a name for himself in the action genre throughout his career. He got his start in music videos in the 1990s, before seeing his breakout role working with director Guy Ritchie in Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. He reteamed with Ritchie two years later for Snatch, a movie that would help cement Statham as one of the burgeoning stars of his generation. In addition to one-off hits such as The Bank Job, Statham has been distinguished by his work in action franchises. This includes both the Expendables and Fast and Furious movies, in which he plays a key role in the ensemble. Statham has also been the protagonist in several action franchises, including the Transporter series and Crank movies. In general, Statham’s franchises help demonstrate his prowess in the genre. One 2023 action sequel, however, was incredibly divisive, yet still doing well on streaming now.

Meg 2: The Trench is now performing well on streaming over a year after its release. The film is a sequel to the kaiju-style aquatic horror comedy The Meg, wherein a team of scientists at the world-famous Mariana Trench discover the massive marine predator, the Megalodon. The first film was successful enough to spawn a sequel, but Meg 2: The Trench divided critics and audiences. Critics panned the film, giving it a 27% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences were far more favorable, awarding it a 73% approval rating.
