Shōgun season 2’s writing gets a positive update from creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks after its Golden Globe wins. While the end of Shōgun season 1 finished adapting James Clavell’s 1975 novel, its massive success on Hulu and FX prompted the development of season 2, continuing the story from where the season 1 finale left off. Its success continued at the Golden Globes, winning four awards for Best Television Series, Best Actor (Hiroyuki Sanada), and Best Actress (Anna Sawai) in the Drama category, alongside Best Supporting Actor (Tadanobu Asano) in Series, Miniseries or Television Film.

The creators confirmed the writing team is hard at work crafting the follow-up to the series, with just six weeks left before the scripts are complete. The Follow-Up Is Aiming To Be Just As Memorable As Season 1

Out of everyone in the cast of Shōgun, it has only been confirmed that Sanada will be reprising his role as Lord Toranaga, with no details yet about what the story will entail. Clavell had written five books in his Asian Saga, but the show is the only one to take place in feudal Japan. This implies season 2 will be an original story picking up where the book ended, if the show’s protagonist is expected to continue having a major role. However, he could also be incorporated into flashbacks in other book adaptations.

While the upcoming story is shrouded in mystery, Kondo and Marks’ update indicates the hard work going into Shōgun season 2, confirming it’s going to happen sooner rather than later. But, with the show winning every Golden Globe it was nominated for, alongside four Emmys back in September, it’s clear the creators want to ensure the follow-up continues to present an engaging story.
