Chicago PD season 12 picks back up after episode 8’s cliffhanger, in which Deputy Chief Charlie Reid subtly threatened Hank Voight, and showrunner Gwen Sigan previews what’s ahead. During the NBC police procedural’s midseason finale, the Intelligence Unit had to clean up Dante Torres’ mess concerning his relationship with Gloria Perez. Sadly, Gloria died in Torres’ arms after getting shot. However, her death wasn’t the end of the team’s problems as Reid confronted Voight at the end of Chicago PD season 12, episode 8, informing the sergeant that he knew how Intelligence tried to cover up Torres’ relationship with Gloria.
Ahead of the Chicago PD season 12 winter 2025 premiere, Sigan sat down with ScreenRant to discuss what comes next for the team. Reid knows about Intelligence’s illegal efforts to protect their own. He is aware that Torres became involved with his CI and Kim Burgess (and eventually the rest of the unit) helped him hide this secret. However, Reid wants to use this information for blackmail instead of turning to Internal Affairs. Heading into the back half of Chicago PD season 12, Voight and his team must contend with Reid’s very serious and dangerous threats. Sigan said:
They should be real worried. They should be incredibly worried. I think Voight is, he’s going to be trying to hide it, of course, and he’s not going to fill in the team just yet, but he knows what’s at stake here, and he also knows there’s a reason. There are going to be some favors being called in. There are going to be some big asks from Reid.
If Reid is holding this information and wanting to be friends, there’s a good reason for that, and we will see through the second half of the season how that relationship grows and what Reid’s motivations are in keeping Intelligence in his pocket and what he wants to use them for throughout the rest of the season. It’ll keep going. It’ll go all the way to the finale.
Not Everyone Will Know About Reid’s Threats At First
As Sigan revealed, Reid has a lot in store for Voight and the rest of the Intelligence Unit in the remaining episodes of Chicago PD season 12. However, Voight will attempt to keep the deputy chief’s blackmail to himself at first. He’s the team leader, and he seemingly wants to be able to deal with Reid’s threats on his own before concerning his team. Unfortunately, Sigan’s comments suggest that Reid’s actions will soon affect all of Intelligence’s members, and Voight won’t be able to keep this secret to himself for very long.

Following Upton’s exit at the end of Chicago PD season 11, someone familiar replaced her in season 12, and they might cause trouble for Voight.
Sigan also teased that the worrying Chicago PD season 12 villain will be a problem up until the finale. Consequently, the audience will likely have to watch many characters do things they don’t want to do to keep Reid quiet. The stakes are higher than ever, and Reid is in the driver’s seat (at least, at first).
Our Take On How Reid’s Blackmail Will Affect Chicago PD Season 12
Intelligence Has Faced Internal Threats Before
Yes, Reid isn’t the first character who works with the CPD and has terrorized the Intelligence Unit, and he likely won’t be the last. However, based on Sigan’s statement, Reid will be the team’s biggest threat yet, which is a good thing. The deputy chief has a lot of power that he should use to his advantage to force Intelligence into doing his bidding.

Reid’s threat level must be high, especially if viewers are to believe he’s one of the worst villains the show has ever produced. Ultimately, since Voight and the other Chicago PD characters have dealt with similar adversaries, Reid must stand out from the crowd. The good news is that Sigan’s comments are promising for the second half of Chicago PD season 12.
Chicago PD season 12 resumes on Wednesday, January 8, at 10 pm ET on NBC.
