Severance Season 3’s Potential Release Timeline Addressed By Creator After Three-Year Wait For Season 2

Severance season 3’s potential release timeline has been addressed by series creator Dan Erickson, following the three-year wait for season 2. Severance season 2 was announced prior to the end of season 1, with filming taking place starting October 2022 in New York City. However, due to alleged behind-the-scenes issues alongside the 2023 Hollywood strikes, filming didn’t wrap on the 10-episode follow-up until April 23, 2024. The show is finally coming back on January 17, 2025, almost three years after the show began.

Speaking with Gizmodo, Erickson revealed conversations are ongoing with Apple TV+ about a possible Severance season 3, including discussions about how long a gap will be between seasons. The series creator explained how the length of time between seasons 1 and 2 was mostly influenced by perfecting the series for its newest season, but also revealed it took the same amount of time to make as season 1 initially did. However, going forward, and given audiences waiting for more, he wants to ensure the process of new seasons is streamlined. Check out what Erickson had to say below:

I certainly would like it to [take less time], yeah. And the conversations we have had about it, that’s been in the conversation. Because Season 2 actually took about the same amount of time as Season 1. The difference, of course, is Season 1 nobody knew what the show was and so they weren’t waiting for it. But at the same time, you’re always looking to sort of fine-tune the process and take what works and leave what doesn’t work and streamline things. So, my hope is that if there is a Season 3, it’s going to be sooner.

What Erickson’s Statement Would Mean For Severance Season 3

The Wait Would Likely Be Shorter

While season 3 hasn’t been announced yet, it appears Erickson has definitive plans about how a follow-up would happen. In the same interview, he explained that there is a number of seasons being discussed internally that would allow the show to tell its complete story. This positive news is echoed by Severance season 2’s reviews, which have showered it in just as much praise as season 1. It also means the alleged issues faced during season 2’s production seemingly won’t be an issue for the series moving forward either.

8 Reasons Severance Season 2’s Reviews Are So Amazing After The 3-Year Wait

Years after season 1’s debut, the reviews for Severance season 2 have been released, proving the show to continue its critically acclaimed streak.

As for the actual timeline itself, the fact seasons 1 and 2 took a collective six years to make means there may still be lengthy gaps between new batches of episodes. However, if Erickson’s plans to “streamline things” is any indication, the next wait might not be as long. Since there’s a plan for where the show is going, this may also help speed along the process. While it will also depend on the cast of Severance and their shooting schedules, if they’re in it for the long haul, the show could wind up with faster turnaround for future seasons.

Without knowing for sure when season 3 could be officially announced, there’s no indication about when it could go into production. Since it will still take a lengthy amount of time for the series to be produced, it’s possible Severance season 3 won’t arrive until 2027, depending on how fast it gets to filming following its renewal. But, with many hailing season 2 as even better than its predecessor, an announcement could be quick, hastening the pace of production.

Severance season 2 will consist of 10 episodes, arriving weekly on Fridays on Apple TV+.
