The medical drama has been popular for a long time. Several of network TV’s longest-running procedural series have been in the medical genre. This includes ER, and an Emmy-winning series that ran from 1994 to 2009. Overlapping partially with this time frame was Grey’s Anatomy, which began in 2005. Grey’s has dominated television ever since, even prompting the spinoff series Station 19. Grey’s Anatomy season 21 is in its mid-season break and will return in March.
While long-standing medical dramas like these have fascinated audiences, it can be even more interesting when new shows come in to shake things up in this genre. Last year, for example, saw the release of Doctor Odyssey. The Ryan Murphy-created show took a more comedic approach to the medical procedural, taking place on a luxury cruise ship with a bumbling lead who clashes with his staff. This was met with mixed results, as Doctor Odyssey got only a 63% Rotten Tomatoes score. Another 2024 medical series, however, has gotten some exciting development news.

Our Take On St. Denis Meidcal’s Renewal
St. Denis Medical Could Be The Next Big NBC Sitcom
Given the show’s record-breaking launch and mid-season order for more episodes, St. Denis Medical‘s renewal should in some ways come as no surprise. After all, the show’s success is just getting started, and could be NBC’s next big program. If the series keeps going along the strong path that it has so far, it could be a treat of a sitcom, as Spitzer’s Superstore track record shows that he can provide quality character development over a multi-season arc.
