Silo Season 2’s Major Book Change For Juliette & Lukas Addressed By Showrunner

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for the Silo season 2 finale and from Wool.

Silo showrunner Graham Yost explains why season 2 made a significant change from the books with Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) and Lukas Kyle (Avi Nash). After becoming allies in season 1, season 2 sees Juliette and Lukas separated, as Juliette tries to figure out how to return to Silo 18, and Lukas becomes the IT Shadow to Bernard Holland (Tim Robbins). Lukas learns from Bernard that Juliette may still be alive, but it is not until Silo season 2’s ending that her survival is confirmed when Lukas sees through the outside display that she has returned to Silo 18.

While speaking with TVLine, Yost explains that, unlike in Hugh Howey’s first book in the Silo trilogy, Wool, he did not want Juliette and Lukas to quickly become romantic, nor did he want Lukas to be fully aware of her survival. This is largely because season 1 fleshes out George Wilkins (Ferdinand Kingsley) and his relationship with Juliette more than the book does. Additionally, Juliette and Lukas secretly communicate when she is in Silo 17 in the books, but this does not occur in the show in order to add more weight to Juliette’s return. Check out Yost’s comments below:

We needed to pace it out in a different way. Because we made so much about the mystery of what happened to George, and George became a real character in Season 1, we couldn’t have Juliette jumping emotionally into another relationship that fast. We needed to pay deference to that “original sin,” because George’s death is what engaged Juliette and leads her on her course of action.

We really didn’t want any contact between the silos, because we didn’t want anyone in Silo 18 knowing she was still alive. We wanted her coming over the hill at the end of the finale to be like, “That ends the rebellion!” and changes everything. That is the real paradigm shift.

What This Means For Silo

The Book Changes Serve The Characters And Story Well

While the Apple TV+ series is an excellent adaptation, it inevitably makes changes from what happens in the Silo books. For Juliette, Lukas, and their relationship, the changes work well in the series. Juliette and Lukas rushing into a romantic relationship in season 1 would have felt disingenuous given that George’s death and Juliette’s determination to uncover the truth is the catalyst and initial motivation for her journey. Season 1 even proves that this would be a mistake when Lukas tries to kiss Juliette even though she does not have those kinds of feelings for him.

Bernard seems deeply disturbed by whatever Lukas tells him Silo season 2’s finally, raising many questions about what the two characters learned.

Juliette was still able to have a significant impact on Lukas in seasons 1 and 2 without them being romantic yet. The lack of communication between Juliette and Lukas while in different silos also positively contributes to their respective arcs in season 2. Without this communication, Juliette and Lukas can only rely on themselves and the people they trust in Silo 17 and Silo 18. This requires them to take even greater risks and makes it more impactful not only for Lukas, but for everyone in Silo 18 when they see Juliette return, and her survival is confirmed.

Silo Season 3 May See Juliette And Lukas Becoming Romantic

Yost’s comments fully justify the changes regarding Juliette and Lukas. At the same time, Silo season 3 may see Juliette and Lukas becoming romantic in the aftermath of their reunion. Enough time has passed since George’s death and since Juliette reconciled with the truth that it would no longer feel disingenuous for her to be with Lukas. He is a more courageous and confident individual, as seen when he stands up to Robert Sims (Common) in the season 2 finale.

Juliette and Lukas can be a better romantic pairing in Silo season 3 than they would have been in previous seasons.

Now that both Juliette and Lukas know about Silo‘s Safeguard procedure and that they are only a small piece in a much larger puzzle, they will likely be aligned in learning the full truth, and doing everything they can to protect their loved ones. Along the way, their collective pursuit of truth and justice can help to build their romance and bring them closer together. Juliette and Lukas can be a better romantic pairing in Silo season 3 than they would have been in previous seasons.
