Squid Game Creator May Consider A Front Man Or Recruiter Spinoff Series

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk opens up about the idea of a possible spinoff to the hit Netflix show. Squid Game season 1 became a global phenomenon upon release in September 2021, becoming Netflix’s most watched series of all-time. The show follows a group of strangers who compete in a series of deadly children’s games for a prize pool totaling ₩45.6. It received numerous accolades, and Squid Game season 2 dropped on December 26, 2024. The third and final season is due for a 2025 release, but that might not be the end of the franchise.

In an interview with THR, Hwang refused to rule out more Squid Game-related projects and revealed that he was open to revisiting the franchise. In fact, he had potential spinoff ideas in mind. He stated that he has considered the possibility of a spinoff show focusing on either the Front Man, or the Creator, and what they were doing in the three years between seasons 1 and 2. Check out Hwang’s full comments below:

One of the ideas I’m tossing around is what happened between season one and two. There’s a three-year gap. So, for example, what was the Front Man doing during those three years? What was the Recruiter doing? When I have some downtime, I like to just toss some ideas around and go wild with my imagination. So I guess we can be open to anything.

The Franchise Could Continue Its Track Record Of Compelling Storytelling

Squid Game remains one of the finest South Korean shows, and one of the most exciting, thrilling, and compelling projects ever made. Much of this is to do with the narrative direction of the show, and the rich, textured characters that make up both seasons. Indeed, the Squid Game cast boasts many memorable characters, not least the mysterious Front Man and the demented Recruiter. The idea of a spinoff touching on their backstory between seasons 1 and 2 is an intriguing prospect, and this is something that could help to enrich the show as a whole.

There is a chance that any planned spinoff could slightly tarnish the original show’s legacy, but it will depend on the direction the project might take.

On the flip side, many might argue that what made those two characters work so well in the first instance was the fact they were so enigmatic, and viewers were only given limited information about them. However, if the franchise is to continue, a spinoff feels like the optimal way forward, with Hwang having already confirmed he has no intention of taking the story beyond three seasons. However, Netflix is often keen to build upon its successful properties, as seen with The Witcher, so it might be eager to pursue a spinoff of any kind.

Our Take On The Future Of Squid Game

A Spinoff May Tarnish The Legacy Of The Original Show

Squid Game will look to conclude after three seasons, hopefully going out as one of the strongest and most complete shows Netflix has ever produced. There is a chance that any planned spinoff could slightly tarnish the original show’s legacy, but it will depend on the direction the project might take. Squid Game season 3 could seek to wrap up the storyline of the Front Man and might give us more backstory on both characters, but Hwang might feel that he has more stories to tell. He may choose to return to Squid Game one last time.
