Teen Wolf star Tyler Hoechlin speaks on whether he would return to his role in the series. Hoechlin is known for playing Derek Hale in the original Teen Wolf TV series, which ran from 2011 to 2017. The show also featured a leading cast including Tyler Posey, Holland Roden, Dylan O’Brien, Linden Ashby, and JR Bourne. The series is a much darker interpretation of the original 1985 Michael J. Fox movie that took a comedic approach to an ordinary high school student discovering he has wolf powers. Now, the Teen Wolf show has a massive following.
In an interview with ScreenRant, Hoechlin answers whether he would ever return to the Teen Wolf franchise. In response, he did not that he is “pretty sure it’s like, [his] fourth death” of the franchise, but he would be absolutely willing to come back. His Teen Wolf co-stars are “most of [his] best friends in life now.” He did think that a Teen Wolf revival was possible because “there’s a demand for it” from fans. Derek Died In Teen Wolf: The Movie
As Hoechlin alludes to in his quote, there’s just one problem with Derek returning to the franchise: canonically, Derek died. In 2023, Paramount+ extended the franchise by creating Teen Wolf: The Movie with a bunch of the original cast members. In this movie, the Nogitsune is back again as the antagonist. In the end of the movie, Derek sacrifices himself by burning up with the Nogitsune. As such, in order to return Derek to the franchise, they would have to explain away this death.

As of right now, there are no active plans for a Teen Wolf reboot. Hoechlin is right, however, that the fan base has continued to be enthusiastic about the series, increasing its likelihood. As such, this may tempt the potential future showrunners to figure out a way to bring back Derek, despite his apparent death in Teen Wolf: The Movie.

While movies and TV shows have faked deaths before, it is hard to survive being burned up in flames. For this reason, is seems like the Teen Wolf team could not bring back Hoechlin for a future revival without essentially decanonizing the Paramount+ movie. This could help a future show itself, but might make viewers question the stakes if characters’ actions and injuries do not appear to have real consequences.
