Adamantium Will “Eventually Be Part Of Project X” In The MCU, Confirms Captain America 4 Director

Captain America: Brave New World will introduce Adamantium into the MCU, setting up an essential X-Men storyline, according to director Julius Onah. While Brave New World is the fourth film in the Captain America franchise, it will have many firsts in the MCU. It’s the first solo film for Sam Wilson as Captain America, the first appearance of Red Hulk, and the first appearance of the Serpent Society. However, the most important first for the MCU’s future could be the introduction of Adamantium, a powerful metal alloy.

The MCU is changing the element’s comic book origins, as the alloy will come from the dead celestial poking out of the Earth. As seen in a new TV spot, President Thunderbolt Ross calls it the “discovery of the millennium”. This discovery causes a geopolitical crisis as countries battle to control this resource. However, comic book readers know that this element leads to Wolverine, and Onah confirms this is where it’s heading. In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley, Onah says Adamantium will “be a part of project X” and compares its global impact to Vibranium.

Adamantium is much more durable. Adamantium is not like Vibranium, which can absorb kinetic energy. Adamantium, as we know, will eventually be a part of Project X. It will eventually be a part the story of Wolverine. So Adamantium now becomes this resource that could change the world in a way that’s very different because Vibranium is something that is really under the purview of the Wakandans. This is why it becomes an amazing geopolitical football in our film.

But also what’s so great about the MCU is it’s an opportunity to take things that are iconic from publishing and find a way to reimagine them for this universe in a way that could be really exciting. And because we haven’t had mutants in the past, because we haven’t had Adamantium, it became such a fun way to surprise audiences with a new sort of vision of what it could be. And I’m just still pinching myself that I get to have the movie that introduces Red Hulk, that introduces Aamantium, that introduces Serpent Society. It is fun for me as a geek, and I think it’s going to be a blast for all audiences when they go see this movie.

It’s important to note that Onah isn’t attached to any MCU X-Men project. Based on what happens in Marvel Comics, he may be making an educated guess on how Adamantium’s introduction will lead to the MCU’s Wolverine. If Onah’s comments are correct, this has important implications for Wolverine. Logan hasn’t had his skeleton bonded with Adamantium, yet as part of “Project X”, or the Weapon X project as it’s referred to in the comics.

While the MCU’s Wolverine has yet to be revealed, a new reveal for Captain America: Brave New World means another hero could possess Adamantium.

Logan could still exist somewhere in the MCU, running around with his skeleton bone hands, similar to how he looked in the beginning of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He isn’t the only character that the Weapon X project created, as it also led to Sabretooth and Deadpool. Lady Deathstrike and X-23 are also powerful wielders of the metal alloy. While Adamantium is mainly associated with Wolverine, many other Marvel characters will be affected by this discovery.

President Ross presents Adamantium in Captain America Brave New World

Onah’s comments suggest that Adamantium is truly the beginning of the MCU’s Mutant Saga. While there have been several mutant teases, such as Ms. Marvel and Namor, Adamantium starts the first storyline that is inherently tied to the X-Men. It will have many implications beyond the X-Men, but the MCU is now gearing up for its mutant era following Avengers: Secret Wars. It will be interesting to see how Captain America: Brave New World introduces it, and its impact on the MCU.
