Ghosts Season 4 Tease Hints At Potential Challenges For Sam & Jay’s Marriage

As Ghosts season 4 enters its final few episodes, Rose McIver teases how a new development may lead to Sam and Jay reevaluating their lives and relationships. Based on the BBC sitcom that aired from 2019 to 2023, the CBS series focuses on a couple who inherit a rundown manor from a recently deceased relative, having to share the home with the spirits of former residents of the land. Ghosts season 4 saw a brief shakeup in Sam and Jay’s dynamics when the latter finally got to see the spirits of their home after being inadvertently exorcised from his body.

Now, during a recent interview with Collider going into the season’s final few episodes, McIver teased that there still may be plenty of new developments that could hold serious ramifications for the series’ two living leads. The star highlighted Sam as a specific example of a character who is set to undergo major challenges regarding how she puts others before herself, leading to her recognizing the unhealthy elements of this behavior:

But at the same time, I think more and more [the show] asks her to be accountable for her decisions and, you know, Sam’s journey is learning how to balance the needs of all of these other people with her own needs and the needs of her relationship. She’s a chronic people-pleaser and the cost that that has on a marriage is no joke.

Furthermore, McIver hinted that Sam and Jay will encounter scenarios in the remaining episodes that introduce new sides of themselves to one another even after their time together, and that it’s necessary to deliver these new dynamics in order to keep audiences guessing about what’s to come from the show. Check out the rest of McIver’s response below:

So I like that, even though they’re in a really strong and wonderful, supportive marriage, there is room for growth, and there is a journey for them to go on. And that what she is good at, he is not, and vice versa. I think that after four years you start to mine more and more of that. And I think you have to in order to keep things engaging for an audience, and as actors we want to find other sides to things, too. It’s like in a relationship after four years you want to discover new elements to that person. So I think there is some pretty specific stuff that comes up later in the season that I’m not able to talk about yet, unfortunately. But it’s a good question.

What McIver’s Tease Could Mean For Ghost’s Future

A Recent Renewal Announcement Could Hint At The Show’s Endgame

McIver’s tease of perspective-changing development comes on the heels of interesting news for CBS’ Ghosts, as the series received a two-season renewal that will see the show continue throughout 2026 and 2027. With this renewal, many may wonder just whether a guaranteed multi-season may influence McIver and the rest of the creatives behind the series’ plans. However, when looking at the series’ source material, there may be a potential plot point that the series may be taking from the original BBC show.

Ghosts: 10 Things The CBS Show Can Learn From The BBC Original

CBS’s version of Ghosts has just begun and while it has been solid, it could learn a lot from looking at the original BBC iteration.

In the BBC’s Ghosts season 5, Sam and Jay’s British counterparts, Allison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe), learn they are expecting a child, leading to the couple attempting to earn enough money to support their new family, several long-awaited revelations, and ultimately the couple selling Button House. As such, the series’ multi-season renewal could allow the crew to properly plan out an ending, with season 4’s upcoming plots paving the way for their exit. However, CBS’ show isn’t beholden to the BBC’s blueprints, meaning the series could always have a longer run.

Regardless of what Ghosts season 4 has in store, it is clear from McIver’s tease that the season’s last few episodes will hold major ramifications. Whether or not they will parallel the UK series’ developments remains to be seen, the tease of a major shake-up for Sam’s dynamic doesn’t suggest whether it will be a positive or negative development. As such, fans may be left on edge wondering whether Sam’s upcoming challenges could lead to a healthier relationship between the living and dead of the Woodstone Mansion, or break those bonds.

New episodes of Ghosts season 4 air Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. on CBS.
