The Gentlemen Season 2 Filming Start Window Confirmed By Theo James As He Teases “Deeper” Storytelling For Netflix Crime Series

The production start window for The Gentlemen has been revealed by Theo James. The Netflix series, which was created by Guy Ritchie as a spinoff of his 2019 movie of the same name, stars James as Eddie, a man who inherits his father’s estate only to learn about his father’s secret life running a weed empire, which leaves him embroiled in a world of crime and violence. The Gentlemen season 2 was renewed by Netflix in August 2024, just over five months after its premiere.

The Hollywood Reporter recently sat down with Theo James while he was promoting his role in the new Osgood Perkins horror movie The Monkey. While discussing his upcoming projects, he revealed that his next project will be the Korean movie The Hole, an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Hye-young Pyun that will be helmed by Kim Jee-woon. However, the next project after that is The Gentlemen season 2, which will begin filming “in the spring,” according to James.

James promises that the upcoming season will maintain its comic tone, but he and Ritchie are seeking to “evolve the show,” which includes “[diving] a little bit deeper in terms of character.” Read his full quote below:

We are starting that in the spring. I’m going to Korea now to work with a really interesting director called Kim Jee-woon on an adaptation of a Korean novel [The Hole], which I’m really excited about. Then, we start season two of The Gentlemen, which is bigger and darker than season one. I really wanted to — and so did Brennan Klein Guy [Ritchie] — make sure that we evolve the show, and that is the intention. As fun as the first season was, if you do the exact same thing again, it may not be as fun, essentially. (Laughs.) You want to be able to dive a little bit deeper in terms of character. It’s still a comedy and it’s still fun, but you need to layer it with more depth.

What This Means For The Gentlemen

The Hiatus Between Seasons Could Grow Long

While the spinoff of the Guy Ritchie movie was popular on Netflix, the fact that The Gentlemen season 2 will not film until spring, more than a year after the season 1 premiere, means that its hiatus will likely be quite long. However, the filming start window offers some insight into when it could premiere, based on precedent. It may follow the same timeline as production on the original season, which ran from November 2022 through June 2023, followed by its premiere on the streaming platform on March 7, 2024.

In its debut week, The Gentlemen claimed No. 1 on Netflix’s Top 10 chart of their most-watched English-language series, a feat that it followed by remaining on the chart for nine additional weeks.

If season 2 follows the same schedule as season 1, this means that production will likely take seven months, while post-production could take an additional nine. Depending on when in spring the series begins shooting, this means that it could potentially premiere any time between mid-July and mid-October 2026. However, even at the lower end of that range, this means that the wait for the story to continue after the Gentlemen season 1 ending will likely extend beyond two full years.

Our Take On The Gentlemen Season 2 Update

The Delay Could Help The Series

Although the wait for The Gentlemen season 2 will likely be prolonged, its delayed arrival has allowed the star to pursue other projects in the meantime, including The Monkey, in which he shows off his range by playing twin brothers plagued by a cursed monkey toy. Being able to star in projects like the 2025 horror movie and The Hole allows him to continue to sharpen his craft as he prepares to dig even deeper into the character of Eddie, which could provide a huge boon to the new season.
