A24 Responds To Marvel Thunderbolts* Trailer Parody

A24 responds to Marvel’s Thunderbolts* trailer imitating their style. Slated for a May 2 release, the upcoming MCU movie is part of Phase 5 and will be the second movie from the franchise released this year. In a notable change from how previous Marvel movies have been marketed, the new official Thunderbolts* trailer takes inspiration from A24 videos by highlighting the acclaimed works of the cast and crew behind the movie, mentioning its lead star Sebastian Stan’s A Different Man, director Jake Schreier’s Beef, and many others.

A24 then retweeted a post containing images from the new Thunderbolts* trailer on their official X/Twitter account, using an image from HBO’s Euphoria to react to the surprise marketing trick. The image features Maddy Perez’s (Alexa Demie) viral catchphrase from season 2: Wait, is this f**king play about us? Check out the post below:

What A24’s Response To Marvel’s Thunderbolts* Trailer Means

Thunderbolts* Is Positioning Itself As Marvel’s First A24-Esque Movie

Not only does the new Thunderbolts* trailer use cliffhanger sequences, which have been a signature style of A24 trailers, but the promo also mentions a shocking number of A24 movies. Everything Everywhere All at Once, Midsommar, You Hurt My Feelings, Minari, Beef, A Different Man, and The Green Knight are all from the esteemed production company. A24’s response to the post further demonstrates Marvel’s marketing tactics to position Thunderbolts* as being on the same level as an A24 movie.

Marvel’s Thunderbolts*: Cast, Release Date & Everything We Know

With an MCU Thunderbolts* movie officially in development, here’s everything that’s known so far including potential cast, story, & release date.

Florence Pugh, who reprises her role as assassin Yelena Belova in the movie, previously compared the upcoming Marvel feature to a “badass indie, A24-feeling assassin movie.” Schreier also hinted that Thunderbolts* has “a certain amount of that Beef tone” and an “emotional darkness,” which is very unlike any other Marvel production. It seems that A24 agrees that the upcoming Marvel movie shares more than just the mention of their brand.

Our Take On A24’s Response To Marvel’s Thunderbolts* Trailer

A24 Doesn’t Seem So Impressed

It certainly takes a lot more than having some of the same people involved to make an A24-quality movie. The amusing response from the award-winning production company doesn’t seem to indicate that they see Thunderbolts* as a threat but are rather more amused by Marvel’s attempt to promote their next movie. On the other hand, the trailer’s refreshing new look does make the movie seem more promising than the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4 movies.

With the studio releasing too many projects too soon, Marvel has seen a decline in critical acclaim and box office grosses. How to overcome fans’ superhero fatigue has been a question for the MCU’s Phase 5. The studio can try to convince the audience that Thunderbolts* will be a Marvel-produced A24-esque movie, but whether they can deliver the promise is an entirely different question. By replying with a meme, A24 seems unimpressed, but willing to get in on the fun.
