Tiana Disney+ Show Cancellation Gets Emotional Response From Original Voice Star

The Princess and the Frog star Anika Noni Rose shares that she is disappointed about the cancellation of the planned television spin-off series Tiana that was being developed for Disney+. Tiana was originally announced by Disney in December 2020. However, in March 2025, it was reported that Walt Disney Animation Studios was no longer focusing on producing long-form content for streaming and that the Tiana series had been cancelled.

In an Instagram post, Rose shared an image of Tiana from the 2009 animated film, showing the character wishing on a star. The post also includes a statement from the actress, which said that she was “disappointed” about the cancellation. She goes on to praise the work that had been done on the series, giving a special shout-out to former Walt Disney Animation Studios Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee, as well as writer and director Joyce Sherri. Rose also praises the animators and music team who worked on Tiana.

The actor writes that she hopes that fans of The Princess and the Frog will make sure to watch the upcoming Tiana Special Event, and encourages them to tell others about it. She also wrote that fans should share how much they desire to see these characters return, by watching it and having the special’s streaming numbers reflect that. At the end of the post, Rose shared her gratitude for those who continue to share how much Tiana means to them. Rose’s post can be found below:

Last week an announcement was made regarding the cancellation of the series Tiana. I’ve been getting loads of messages expressing kindness, support, and overwhelming disappointment. I’ve also been asked by different outlets to make a statement, but I’d rather talk to you directly.

I too am deeply disappointed that the continuation of Tiana’s journey in series form has been cut short. The series was a long time coming, and a lot of beautiful work was put into it all by the creatives involved, including -but not limited to- long time champion Jenn Lee, our wonderful writer/director Joyce Sherri, some fabulous animators, and an amazing music team.

As hurtful as it is for anything you’ve put your heart and soul in to be prematurely ended, my hope is that when what is now to be a ‘Tiana Special Event’ airs, that all of you beautiful, loving, loyal fans who’ve been championing not just the series, but a Princess And The Frog sequel, tune in. And when I say tune in, I mean, tell your friends, family, coworkers, baby sitter; tell all the people you know who have loved Princess Tiana, Naveen, Louis, Charlotte, Mama Odie, and the magic they’ve created together over the years, and make sure you are watching. Show your love and your desire in the numbers. Make that desire an undeniable and real thing.

Until then, we will be continuing to work hard to bring you the most beautiful content we can.

I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for the love you have shown, for every #TianaTuesday, for every #Disneybound, for every one of you who has lifted my heart in this space over the years, and made it possible for Princess Tiana to still be such a vibrant, impactful presence.

Make a wish and hold on tight…

A Message That Perfectly Captures Tiana

Tiana and Prince Naveen in The Princess and the Frog

Throughout Rose’s message, there were times that it felt like it could have been written by Tiana herself. The message often talked about working hard on the series and the upcoming special. Hard work was a very important trait to Tiana, and was shown throughout the film as she tried to raise enough money so that she could start her own restaurant.

The message talking about making a wish is also reminiscent of The Princess and the Frog, since the film would often mention wishing upon a star. Rose’s post may have been about disappointing news, but her optimistic tone does give hope that there still could be a bright future for these beloved characters after the upcoming special.
