Severance’s Miss Huang Star Provides Insight Into Her Mystery Character & Her Connection With Lumon

Severance‘s Miss Huang star, Sarah Bock, shares insight into her mystery character and her connection with Lumon. Premiered this past January, the second season of Apple TV’s flagship series continues following Mark Scout (Adam Scott) and the other severed members of the Macrodata Refinement division at Lumon Industries after activating the overtime contingency. At the start of Severance season 2, Mr. Milchick introduces Mark to his new deputy manager of the severed floor, Miss Huang, who is mysteriously a child.

During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Sarah Bock shared some insight into her mystery character, Miss Huang, and her connection with Lumon in Severance season 2. However, she admits that even she doesn’t know Miss Huang’s full backstory. This was partially by design, as her not knowing helped heighten the mystery surrounding the character. Read her full comments below:

I don’t really know the entire story of why she’s even there or her family history or anything about that. Most of it was just stuff I was kind of coming up with in my own imagination… I felt that having that mystery as an actor was sometimes helpful in amplifying the mystery surrounding the character.

What Does She Know?

While she doesn’t know Miss Huang’s full backstory, Sarah Bock did share a few insights into her character and her connection with Lumon. Bock believes that Miss Huang’s stint as deputy manager of the severed floor is an indoctrination tool used by Lumon. Furthermore, her presence serves to further infantilize the Innies since “she is in some effect older than they are, and possesses more knowledge about certain things.” For example, she might be aware that outie Helena pretended to be innie Helly to spy on MDR.

Wild Severance Season 2 Theory Explains Why Miss Huang Works At Lumon – & It’s Connected To Gemma’s Death

Miss Huang is a fascinating addition to Severance season 2, so it’s no surprise that she may be connected to the show’s biggest mystery: Gemma.

However, Bock doubts that Miss Huang knows about Miss Casey’s detainment, or other mysteries such as the significance of Lumon’s goats, or the true implications of completing the Cold Harbor file. In Severance season 2 episode 9, “The After Hours,” Miss Huang finishes her fellowship as deputy manager, and is sent away by Milchick. During the interview, Bock speculated why, saying, “You could view it as him getting rid of her out of animus. Maybe he fears she will endanger his position.”

She continues, “On the other hand, we also discussed the possibility of him having her leave early out of care and protection. He’s seen the oppressive ways in which the company has been treating him, and maybe he is sending her away to spare her of some of that pain.” Bock emphasizes that Miss Huang is still a child: “She is being sent away from her home and her family with pretty much zero warning. I think that breaks down the walls she’s put up, and in that moment, she is just a scared and helpless kid who doesn’t know what is coming.”

Severance season 2 episode 8, “Sweet Vitriol,” revealed the backstory of Harmony Cobel’s character, specifically her upbringing in Salt’s Neck, where she was subjected to child labor under Lumon Industries, just like Miss Huang. This is how the corporation indoctrinates its next generation of devoted followers of Kier and Eagan, and builds support for the severance procedure, with kids like Miss Huang given supervisory roles over Innies. This form of child labor inflicts profound harm on them and their moral compass, which is likely where Miss Huang’s storyline is headed in Severance.
