First Look At Alec Baldwin Western Following Tragic On-Set Death Of Cinematographer

The first trailer has been released for Rust. The film led by Alec Baldwin is most infamous for the on-set death of Halyna Hutchins after a prop gun discharged a live round. This shooting led to a highly publicized trial, where on-set armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was charged with involuntary manslaughter. Despite the trial and the controversy, Rust was finally released at the EnergaCamerimage Film Festival in Poland in November 2024, and will now come to theaters and digital on May 2. The film itself is a Western about a boy who goes on the run with his estranged grandfather.

Per People, the trailer for Rust starts with eerie music playing and images of windmills and more. A line of dialogue says, “The only order that exists in this world is the order we impose.” A young boy witnesses some of the brutality of this imposition, seeing a character get hanged in public. He then travels into the dark wilderness with an older man, experiencing gun fights and other opposition along the way.

What This Trailer Means For Rust

Rust Builds Tension

The Rust trailer maintains a heightened level of intensity over its short runtime. Baldwin’s grandfather’s character will seemingly do anything to protect his young grandson, even when that child commits an accidental crime. Stylistically, Rust seems to craft its tone through low lighting and intense music, aiding the situational tension caused by the characters being on the run.

Our Take On The Rust Trailer

The Main Relationship Looks Interesting

Rust Patrick Scott McDermott looking concerned

The most compelling part of Rust seems to be the grandfather-and-grandson relationship between Baldwin and young performer Patrick Scott McDermott. Even in the trailer, the characters are seen having a lot of solo time together, sitting by a campfire, and traveling on horseback together. If writer-director Joel Souza can pull off these character beats while maintaining an interesting Western genre film narrative, Rust could manage to be a success even after all of its controversy.

In addition to Baldwin, Rust‘s main cast includes Patrick Scott McDermott, Travis Fimmel, Jake Busey, Francis Fisher, and Josh Hopkins.
