It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia creator Rob McElhenney’s AppleTV+ comedy focused on the highs and lows of video game development has been canceled after four seasons. McElhenney is one of the creatives behind the long-running FX dark comedy, which is a twisted sitcom that follows five bar owners in the titular city and their various underhanded and often mean-spirited schemes. It’s Always Sunny has seen McElhenney not only portray the complicated, overly-masculine bouncer Mac but also serve as a producer and writer on the show.
While McElhenney has continued to be a mainstay in It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia cast and crew for 20 years, he has also appeared in ER, Lost, The Mindy Project, and Fargo. However, one notable development within his Hollywood career outside of acting is his working relationship with Ryan Reynolds, co-owning the Wrexham AFC football team alongside several other shared business efforts with him and his Always Sunny collaborators, Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day. McElhenney’s Wrexham career was documented in the Welcome to Wrexham documentary series.
Mythic Quest Has Been Cancelled After Four Seasons
The Series’ Ending Will Receive A Surprising Rework
In 2020, McElhenney and key It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia creatives Day and Megan Ganz joined forces with AppleTV+ to produce Mythic Quest, a comedy series that focuses on the developers behind a highly popular MMORPG as they try to guarantee its success. McElhenney stars as the game’s creator Ian Grimm, alongside Charlotte Nicdao, David Hornsby, Ashly Burch, Jessie Ennis, Danny Pudi, Imani Hakim, F. Murray Abraham, and Naomi Ekperigin. With each season of the show having accumulated Rotten Tomatoes scores that consistently perform over 90%, the series spanned 40 episodes across four seasons and two specials.

However, Variety has now confirmed that Mythic Quest will not be renewed further beyond the two-season order that it received in 2021. In a statement released by McElhenney, Hornsby, and Ganz, the three creatives celebrated the show by stating their pride in what they created while thanking the cast and crew who contributed to it. It was also confirmed that the tenth and final episode of season 4 will be updated and edited to better provide a definitive ending, with the reworked episode set to release later in April. Endings are hard. But after four incredible seasons, Mythic Quest is coming to a close. We’re so proud of the show and the world we got to build—and deeply grateful to every cast and crew member who poured their heart into it. To all our fans, thank you for playing with us. To our partners at Apple, thank you for believing in the vision from the very beginning. Because endings are hard, with Apple’s blessing we made one final update to our last episode—so we could say goodbye, instead of just game over.
Our Thoughts On Mythic Quest Season 4’s Cancellation & Re-edited Ending
The Series’ Ending Doesn’t Necessarily Mean That It Cannot Return
While many Mythic Quest fans may be disappointed by the show’s sudden end, McElhenney, Hornsby, and Ganz’s promise of an updated finale will leave many breathing a sigh of relief. Season 4’s ending featured a heartfelt romantic moment between Ian and Poppy (Nicdao) and concluded with the pair questioning what this embrace means for them. Had it been renewed, season 5 would likely have unpacked the cliffhanger. As such, with the crew behind the series promising a new edit, Mythic Quest fans won’t be left on a painful cliffhanger.
