Sinners has passed yet another enormous box office milestone. The new Ryan Coogler horror movie stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twins Smoke and Stack, who must stand their ground against a formidable evil when they return to their Mississippi hometown in 1932. The Sinners release has set numerous box office records, including having the biggest Easter weekend debut for an R-rated movie. After climbing to more than $300 million worldwide and becoming one of the 10 highest-grossing horror movies ever, it is set to become available for purchase on video on demand platforms on June 3.
Per Warner Bros., Sinners has passed the $250 million milestone at the domestic box office thanks to its Friday gross of $2.4 million pushing its cumulative gross to $250.2 million. It is only the second movie to pass this milestone in 2025 after A Minecraft Movie, which has so far grossed $418.6 million in North America. Additionally, by the end of Memorial Day weekend, it is set to surpass The Hangover Part II ($254.5 million) as the 11th highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time at the domestic box office.
What This Means For Sinners
It Is A Huge Success Story For Original Horror
The Sinners box office has continued to grow to even more impressive heights since its debut in April. In addition to becoming the 157th movie to ever cross the $250 million milestone at the domestic box office, it is the third highest-grossing horror movie on the same chart. It has only trailed behind 1975’s generation-defining blockbuster Jaws ($273.7 million) and the 2017 smash hit It ($328.8 million). Because both of those movies were based on books, this also means that Sinners is the highest-grossing original horror movie in North America.
Jaws is based on the 1974 Peter Benchley novel and It is based on the 1986 Stephen King book.
In order to claim that title, Sinners has surpassed huge domestic hits such as John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place ($188 million), Jordan Peele’s Get Out ($175.8 million) and Us ($175.1 million), and the found footage smash The Blair Witch Project ($140.5 million). It is also performing well outside of the genre, as only 25 other movies have passed the $250 million domestic milestone in the 2020s so far, ranging from 2024’s Mufasa: The Lion King at $254.6 million to 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home at $814.9 million.

It Has Nothing Left To Prove
Given the fact that the movie is currently in its sixth weekend and that its VOD release is coming soon, it seems likely that its domestic box office results will quickly begin to dwindle, preventing it from climbing much higher up the chart. The reported budget of Sinners is a whopping $90 million, but that places its estimated break-even point somewhere around $225 million, which is a total that it has already surpassed at the domestic box office alone. Therefore, it doesn’t have anything more to prove after hitting this historic milestone.
