Ever since James Gunn took creative control of the DCU
, fans have been dying for updates about heroes like Wonder Woman
, and it seems like things are finally shaping up. James Gunn announced a total of 10 new projects which would kick off the DCU, including one titled Paradise Lost, which would be a TV series following Wonder Woman’s home, Themyscira, in the years before she was born.
In addition, the DCU promised to have a new Justice League complete with heroes like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. However, in the years since these things were announced, almost nothing has been mentioned in terms of updates about the DCU’s Diana Prince. And now, as the DCU prepares to release Superman, it appears that Gunn has finally got some positive developments for Wonder Woman.
The DC Universe’s Wonder Woman Story Has Had Very Few Updates So Far
Diana Prince Is Nowhere To Be Seen In The DCU
James Gunn is very vocal online, frequently communicating with fans through social media, and answering questions. Thanks to his openness, there have been plenty of details shared about his process when deciding what movies and shows are being worked on, and how things are progressing in the DCU, but up to this point, there wasn’t a lot of news about Wonder Woman.

How can the DCU’s Wonder Woman stand out after Gal Gadot’s iteration?
Aside from just the casting choice, I’m really curious how the DCU version of Wonder Woman will depart from the DCEU’s. I’d love to see her remain on Themyscira for a longer period of time, exploring the dynamics of the Amazons. Having a character like Circe as a villain could be a ton of fun, especially after we saw her appear in Creature Commandos.
Gunn has stated that when it comes to greenlighting a DCU project, he will not do so, or begin working on any other aspect such as casting, or filming, or finding a director until a script is ready. In this way, he ensures that stories are the top priority, and the rest of the pieces will fall in line with that story. So presumably, there hasn’t been a strong enough script for Wonder Woman to date.
James Gunn’s Newest Wonder Woman Update Teases “Encouraging” Things
James Gunn Offered Some Insight About What To Expect For Wonder Woman
However, when a fan reached out on Threads to Gunn asking about Wonder Woman updates, he recently responded by saying: “Not to be shared publicly yet but yes. Encouraging.” Now, this is obviously not a huge update, but considering how Gunn approaches projects in the DCU, this would suggest that a script has either been finalized, or it is very nearly there. And because we know there is a TV prequel story for Wonder Woman slated to appear in the DCU, it could be referring to either that project, or an actual Wonder Woman movie.
Either way, “Encouraging,” suggests that there is movement, and as long as that first step is completed, Gunn will begin getting the other elements in place. And if the script is in fact completed, Gunn may have already begun looking for directors or other teams to begin getting the production into the next phase. Either way, this is the most news that Gunn has revealed about the DCU’s Wonder Woman in years, and it is exciting despite the brevity.

The DCU Is Already Dropping Wonder Woman Breadcrumbs
Looking deeper into the DCU, there are other things that suggest a full Wonder Woman update may not be as far off as some people may think. In James Gunn’s own Creature Commandos, an animated DCU series that provides the first official look at the DCU, the show references Themyscira and a neighboring community, as well as featuring a Wonder Woman villain, Circe, in a prominent role. This further puts a spotlight on the stories surrounding Wonder Woman, and suggests it is a priority to get this character established in the DCU.

6 DC Superheroes About To Appear On The Big Screen For The First Time In Superman
Superman will launch the DC Universe, and it features a large roster of superheroes, many of whom have never made it to the big screen before.
In addition, the world of the DCU appears to be one where many of these heroes have already been operating for some time. In Creature Commandos, there are flashes and visions which showcase the heroes of the Justice League, such as Batman and Wonder Woman, hinting that these characters are already actively working in the DCU. And for someone like Diana Prince, who is an immortal Amazonian whose life extends far back into the past, it makes sense for her character to be established in the DCU. However, for a full Wonder Woman update, it appears that Gunn is keeping things under wraps, possibly to avoid shifting attention away from Superman.
