With Spider-Man 4 scheduled to start filming later this year, Andrew Garfield addresses whether he’s making a comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following his well-received return as part of the Spider-Man: No Way Home cast, the world has actively been eager to learn if Garfield will ever come back as his iteration of the Marvel web-slinger. While The Amazing Spider-Man 3 may not be happening anytime soon, there is a different Spider-Man project that has the potential to bring back Garfield for another turn as the character.
In a new interview with GQ, Garfield discussed if there was any truth to reports of him reprising the role of Peter Parker in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4. Garfield said that any reports about him being signed on for Spider-Man 4 are not true, while also bringing up how no one would believe him following the press tour leading up to Spider-Man: No Way Home, when he vehemently denied he was in the movie, but he did, in fact, appear.
I’m gonna disappoint you. Yeah, no. But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on. If it felt in line with my soul and was gonna be fun. Maybe I’m gonna have like five kids at some point, and I’m gonna need to start saving up for the school tuition or something.
As of right now, the Spider-Man 4 story details have been kept under wraps by Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, with the MCU audience actively trying to figure out what direction they will take with Holland’s incarnation of the web-crawler. Given that Spider-Man 4 will be released a little less than three months after Avengers: Doomsday in 2026, the idea of another multiverse-centric story isn’t out of the question, which would make a good case for Garfield to be part of it. But based on Garfield’s latest comments, this could be a case where he’s telling the truth because they could be in the midst of negotiations to have him back, or haven’t started yet.
Spider-Man 4 isn’t the only MCU project that Garfield has been heavily speculated to take part in, as many are theorizing he’ll have some role to play in Avengers: Doomsday and/or Avengers: Secret Wars. Even if Garfield was attached to either of the Avengers sequels, he would still not be able to reveal anything until Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures announced it themselves. Given how Avengers: Doomsday is set to start filming this year, a potential return of Garfield’s Spider-Man in either that film or Spider-Man 4 would likely be kept under wraps to make it another huge surprise for the audience.
Why Andrew Garfield & Tobey Maguire Returning For Spider-Man 4 Could Make Perfect Sense
If Spider-Man 4 goes with the multiverse angle again, there are a number of reasons it would be suitable to have not just Garfield but also Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man brought back into the fold. While The Multiverse Saga has faced its ups and downs since Phase 4 – which kicked off in the midst of the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic – Spider-Man: No Way Home has been the most profitable film in this ongoing story. This all stems from the fact that Holland’s trilogy finale became historical by bringing every live-action cinematic version of Spider-Man together in one massive adventure.
Given how three generations of Spider-Man fans came together for Spider-Man: No Way Home, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios know already that having the trio back in Spider-Man 4 would be a guaranteed box office hit. From a story perspective, this would also be fitting, as the MCU is about to head into the end of The Multiverse Saga. Depending on how Avengers: Doomsday ends, the audience is going to want to see the ramifications in the MCU right away, which makes Spider-Man 4‘s July 2026 release date all the more notable.
Spider-Man 4 would also be able to establish how the events of Avengers: Doomsday are affecting other universes, which would organically set up a reason for Garfield and Maguire’s Spider-Men to be back in Holland’s movie. Not only could the audience get a check-in on what happened to their Spider-Man variants after the Spider-Man: No Way Home ending, but Doctor Doom’s effect across the multiverse could be referenced if something has happened to their worlds. With that kind of setup, it also paves the way more naturally for Garfield and Maguire to have roles in Avengers: Secret Wars, too.
While time will tell if Garfield is actually part of Spider-Man 4, it’s still wonderful to hear that he is keeping the door open to return as Spider-Man under the right circumstances. Whether it is in Spider-Man 4 or the Avengers movies in Phase 6, it would be shocking if Garfield’s version of Spider-Man didn’t come back at all as Marvel gets ready to wrap up The Multiverse Saga. But until more news arrives about Spider-Man 4, the world can always rewatch Garfield’s MCU debut in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
