Maleficent 3 Has Gotten A Major Update
Angelina Jolie Stars As An Iconic Disney Villain
Maleficent 3 has gotten a major update. The movie is set to follow the events of the original 2014 movie, which was a retelling of the origin of the titular Sleeping Beauty villain (Angelina Jolie), and its 2019 sequel Mistress of Evil The Disney live-action franchise has so far collectively grossed $1.248 billion at the worldwide box office. While the upcoming Maleficent 3 was confirmed to be in development in 2021, very little news has emerged about the project since then.
The Maleficent cast also included Elle Fanning as Aurora and Brenton Thwaites as Prince Philip.
Deadline recently ran a story about how writer Linda Woolverton has joined the upcoming animated series Hundred Acre Wood’s Winnie and Friends as an executive producer. However, when listing her credits, they mentioned that she is attached to Maleficent 3 as the screenwriter after having written the first movie and co-written the second with Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue. While the update is oblique, this is the most positive confirmation that the movie is still actively in development since Jolie confirmed that she intended to reprise the role during an interview in December 2023.
What This Means For Maleficent 3
Movement Could Happen Soon
This update does not necessarily mean that Maleficent 3 is any closer to being made than it was before. However, the fact that the report mentions the project at all seems to reflect that its status as an in-development is still secure. As Disney live-action remakes have hit a recent lull, including Snow White struggling to get out from under its roughly $250 million budget, the Angelina Jolie sequel could look like an even more enticing prospect considering the performance of the previous installments, meaning that more substantial progress could be announced soon.
