Daniel Day-Lewis Officially Returns To Movies This Year As First Project Since 2017 Gets Release Date

The release date has been revealed for Daniel Day-Lewis’ new film, Anemone. Day-Lewis is one of the most celebrated actors of his time. While he started working in acting as early as the 1970s, it was not until 1985 that he saw his breakout role in My Beautiful Laundrette. Five years later, he went on to win the first Oscar for which he was nominated, for Best Actor in My Left Foot. Day-Lewis has since been nominated for five more Oscars, winning two (for Lincoln and There Will Be Blood).

As per Focus Features, a release date has been revealed for Anemone. The movie will come out in limited release on October 3, and then expand to a wider release the following weekend, on October 10. According to an early logline, “the film explores the complex and profound ties that exist between brothers, fathers, and sons.

He Had Announced Retirement In 2017

While Day-Lewis plays the starring role in Anemone, he is also involved in the project behind-the-scenes. The actor served as one of the co-writers for the film, marking his screenwriting debut. The movie’s other writer is his own son, Ronan Day-Lewis, who also serves as the film’s director. In addition to Daniel Day-Lewis, Anemone features a leading cast including Sean Bean, Samuel Bottomley, Safia Oakley-Green, and Samantha Morton. Anemone is a significant step in Day-Lewis’ career, as it is taking him out of retirement. He had previously announced the end of his acting career in 2017, after he acted in the Paul Thomas Anderson movie Phantom Thread. While he mostly stuck to these retirement plans, it was announced late last year that he would be returning for another film. Now, eight years after Day-Lewis’ previous movie, he will return for Anemone, which officially has a fall release date.

Could Daniel Day-Lewis Get Nominated For Another Oscar?

Anemone‘s early October release positions it at the beginning of awards season. Being the directorial debut of Ronan Day-Lewis, the movie’s overall quality remains one of its biggest unknowns. If successful, however, Day-Lewis could potentially be looking at another Oscar nomination. He is selective about his projects, as even before retirement, he only made a movie every couple of years. Three of his last four releases earned him Oscar nods, so Day-Lewis will likely hope for a return to that positive streak for Anemone.
