Director Guy Ritchie and the cast address the chances of Fountain of Youth 2 after the ending of the new Apple TV+ movie sets up a sequel. Directed by Ritchie, with a script written by James Vanderbilt, the new Apple TV+ action adventure film follows treasure hunter Luke (John Krasinski) and his team, which includes his estranged sister Charlotte (Natalie Portman) and protector Esme (Eiza González), as they attempt to find the famed Fountain of Youth. The Fountain of Youth ending sets up a sequel, suggesting that the team could search for more forbidden treasure in the future.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Guy Ritchie and the Fountain of Youth cast addressed the chances of a sequel. Eiza González shared her thoughts on the ending, especially Esme’s playful exchange with Luke, hinting at their lingering feelings for one another, which also implies that her role as a guardian isn’t quite finished yet:
Eiza González: It has very layered meanings in it. It’s a perfect cliffhanger for the end of their relationship. What is she really trying to say here? Is it a relationship? Is it protectors? What’s next?
Overall, the cast, including Natalie Portman and González, are enthusiastic about a possible sequel:
Natalie Portman: If people wanted to see more, I would definitely be up for making more. It was so joyful to make this.
Eiza González: Why wouldn’t I? What a dream to be traveling the world with this amazing cast again. I do think that these types of movies need to be continued to be made for kids, to keep the innocence going, the passion of curiosity. You keep a family legacy. So, I’d jump right in.
González is also eager to delve deeper into the lore surrounding the “protectors,” the mysterious organization that Esme is part of, which appears to be led by an Elder character played by Stanley Tucci:
I asked Guy, “Are there other protectors?” And he’s like, “Of course there has to be.” Given that, it could be fun to have another sequel. We did go to one of the seven wonders of the world. There could be more. That’s the fun thing about adventure movies; it could keep going and going and going.
Director Guy Ritchie has no shortage of ideas for other artifacts that the group could pursue, though he’s keeping those details under wraps for now:
Guy Ritchie: It was the most pleasurable film to make. It was one of those films that you don’t really want to end. People had such a lovely time doing it that they’d love to go back for another bite. So, we’ll have to see how we do. We’d all love to go back.
They’re Enthusiastic About A Possible Sequel
Director Guy Ritchie and the Fountain of Youth cast, including Natalie Portman and Eiza González, are enthusiastic about a possible sequel. However, this is only one element involved in the equation that determines whether a movie gets a sequel. One of the most important factors is the film’s critical and audience response, which, in the case of Fountain of Youth, is not good. The movie has 36% and 44% scores on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics and audiences largely considering it a derivative, emotionally flat, and uninspired adventure that mimics better movies without capturing their charm, excitement, or depth.

Fountain Of Youth Review: I’m Glad This Movie Was Made, But I’m So Frustrated It Wasn’t Made Better
In some ways, Fountain of Youth is the adventure story I was looking for, but it’s so filled with flaws that I’m equal parts amused and frustrated.
The chances of a sequel will also be determined by the film’s financial success. Since Fountain of Youth is streaming on Apple TV+, there are no box office figures to determine whether it’s a financial success. However, the movie did debut at No. 1 on Apple TV’s Top 10 movies chart, though it’s common for new movies to quickly rise to the top of a streaming service’s charts. The real test will be whether Fountain of Youth can sustain this place on the chart for an extended period of time.
Our Take On Fountain Of Youth 2
It’s One Sequel That Probably Doesn’t Need To Be Made
In an era already overflowing with sequels, remakes, and reboots, Fountain of Youth 2 is probably one sequel that doesn’t need to be made. Not every cliffhanger needs a second act, and in the case of Fountain of Youth, the story already found its natural ending, and that’s okay. Sometimes, the greatest adventure is knowing when to stop.
