The Hunger Games is all about fighting, but Jack Quaid faced real-world pain while on set. The Hunger Games franchise first began filming in 2011, and the first four movies were all released in consecutive years. While author Suzanne Collins’ series was certainly popular before 2011, it was still a risk for Lionsgate. After all, the first movie cost $78 million and was led by a relative unknown in Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss Everdeen). It relied on relatively young stars, so success was never a guarantee. Fortunately, many of its actors have gone on to enjoy sizable careers.
Jack Quaid, who played Marvel, was one of those stars, but it was a difficult path to get there. In an interview with IGN, Quaid explained that it was his first official role in Hollywood. Unfortunately, he also broke his nose before filming. Then 19 years old, Quaid was training with a medicine ball. The day before shooting, he threw the ball, it bounced back, and it broke his nose. He believes that his nose has “never looked the same“. He even pointed out that some scenes feature the swelling. Check out the footage below:
What The Injury Meant For The Hunger Games
Jack Quaid Broke His Nose In His First Movie Role
A broken nose is an issue for any production. Injuries to other parts of the body are easy to disguise with clothes, but the face is impossible to hide for many movies. Had Jennifer Lawrence or Josh Hutcherson suffered the injury, it would have led to either a filming delay or an additional scene featuring the cause of their injury. Fortunately for the producers, Quaid did not have a significant role. He was just another Career, and he did not have much of a role or personality outside of that. His broken nose was easy to ignore.
Lawrence was injured while filming The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), as filming-related ear infections restricted her hearing.
The injury likely had a much larger impact on Quaid. This was his first on-screen acting role and should have been a moment for rejoicing. Instead, he struck himself in the face and shattered his nose. He would return for a small cameo in the sequel, Catching Fire, but it is still hardly enough to make up for the pain of a real-world injury. Luckily, Quaid has gone on to have a rewarding career since. He is now a rising star in Hollywood and is arguably the leading man of The Boys.

Our Take On Jack Quaid’s Hunger Games Injury
It Had No Impact On His Career
Quaid could have been discouraged by his injury. Instead, he rose to become an increasingly prominent actor. He has starred in The Boys, The Companion (2025), and the upcoming Novacaine (2025). The injury appears to have had no impact on his career at all. His small role in The Hunger Games has helped him to become a star. Even if his broken nose was a major problem in 2011, Quaid is laughing about it today, so it is hard to say that it had any lasting effects. Still, it is unlikely that Quaid bounces medicine balls during training now.
