After his previous heroic role of Aquaman, Jason Momoa is ready to take a villainous turn in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’s Lobo. The actor is largely known for his time as Arthur Curry, but he’s long wanted to portray the supervillain, who he cites as his lifelong favorite DC character. Momoa’s vocal campaign to play Lobo paid off, as he officially joined the cast of Supergirl in late 2024.
Recently, Momoa spoke about taking on this dream role during an interview with Entertainment Weekly to promote A Minecraft Movie. The actor stated that he was “born to do it,” before adding: “I just think I’m the right person to play the role.” While many actors fear being associated with just one role or type of character, Momoa isn’t too stressed about this happening to him as Lobo. In fact, he said: “If we’re going to typecast me in anything, let’s put me in Lobo. Motorcycles, smoking cigars, partying, dreadlocks… loves a fight, funny.“
Describing the character as “the most badass bounty hunter in the galaxy,” Momoa revealed that he was so excited upon wearing the Lobo costume, he went method. The actor explained: “It’s the first time I asked everybody to call me by my character’s name.” He then joked around with his Minecraft costar Jack Black, quipping “Lobo has to go take a deuce.”
Jason Momoa Is Committed To Doing Lobo Justice
Momoa’s enthusiasm towards Lobo as a character bodes well for both his performance and his future in the DCU. Because of his love of the character, he seems especially dedicated to making his Lobo memorable. Additionally, his wanting to be called Lobo is somewhat endearing, knowing how long he’s loved the villain. Speaking with Screen Rant, the actor teased his appearance in Supergirl:
Well, this is the role I’ve always wanted to play. That’s the comic I loved, so I’m really nervous about it. It’s kind of a no-brainer to play this character. It’s pretty big. I don’t want to give away too much, but I mean, we look pretty dead on, exactly like the character, and he’s pretty rough and gruff and… I’ll say the bike’s really cool.
Momoa kept quiet on any future plans for the character beyond Supergirl. However, he said he was hopeful for a potential return.
Jason Momoa Is A Natural Fit For Lobo
Momoa is known for his unique portrayals of characters that are simultaneously rough-around-the-edges and eccentric. Naturally, this would lend itself to an outrageous role like Lobo. Momoa has a clear understanding of Lobo, and it seems like he’s having fun with the part, which might just make for an iconic performance.
