Superman’s David Corenswet is about to make his big-screen debut as the Man of Steel this summer, but the actor said he could not elaborate on any future plans for the character. Along with Corenswet, the film will star Nicholas Hoult, Rachel Brosnahan, Edi Gathegi, and Nathan Fillion, among others. Superman, which is directed by DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn, will be most audience members’ first look into the new DC Universe, meaning the reaction to the film will have a huge impact moving forward.
The importance of Superman’s success is likely not lost on Corenswet. In an interview with Esquire España (translated by Comic Book Resources), he dodged a question regarding his DCU future. Deflecting, Corenswet stated: “I don’t think it’s up to me to answer that.” The actor then clarified that “it’s up to James Gunn, who has a terrific imagination,” and he is “just there where they need [him] to be to say what was written, although that doesn’t always happen.“
Just Because Corenswet Couldn’t Answer, Doesn’t Mean Something Is Wrong
Though Corenswet declined to comment on his future as Superman, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have any further appearances in the role lined up. Even if the actor is under contract for more DC films or series, he is likely not at liberty to openly discuss projects that are not public knowledge yet. Additionally, there may be hints about his next DCU project in Superman that he does not want to spoil prior to the film’s release.

Superman actor David Corenswet explains how Clark Kent’s career as a journalist is an important element of the character and his morality.
Alternatively, it is no secret that the future of the DCU rests solely upon Superman. When Screen Rant visited the set of Superman, Gunn admitted that “a lot [is riding on the film].” He continued: “I mean, we’re not going to just keep making movies.” As a result, the director said making Superman was “miserable,” adding that “hopefully it’s for the greater good.” Corenswet’s avoidance of discussing his future as Superman could be because he honestly does not know if he’ll continue in the role, as the film’s reception could make or break the DCU.
Time Will Tell If Superman Successfully Launches The DCU
At the end of the day, Corenswet is an actor hired to play a role in Superman. While that means he’ll have more insight into the goings-on behind-the-scenes of the DCU than fans, it does not mean he knows everything the executives are planning. Could he know more than he is saying? Yes, he probably does. However, it’s possible that DC Studios is waiting to see how Superman performs before greenlighting Corenswet’s next outing as the Man of Steel.
