Ken Jeong reacts to reading the long-awaited script for Community: The Movie, saying “It just brought me right back.” Back in 2022, it was officially announced that a Community movie was in development for Peacock with the show’s original creator, Dan Harmon, writing the script. Much of the main cast is also expected to return, including Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong, the last of whom played Greendale Community College’s Spanish teacher, Ben Chang.
During an interview with TV Insider promoting his appearance on Fox’s Accused, Ken Jeong reacted to reading the long-awaited script for Community: The Movie. The star imagined what filming would look like and while he couldn’t reveal too many details about the movie itself, he did share that reading the script made him “emotional” and “brought [him] right back.” Read his full comments below:
There is a script, there is a plan. We just don’t know when [it will happen]. Once that’s agreed upon, it’ll be magical and real emotional. I think being on set experiencing that again [will be] so gratifying. Words can’t even express. It is funny. I got to meet one of my best friends, Joel McHale, because of that [show]. It made me emotional, and just brought me right back, and that’s all I’m legally allowed to say.
Its Timetable Remains Uncertain
In 2022, it was announced that a Community movie was officially in development for Peacock. However, over the ensuing years, the project has faced many obstacles preventing it from progressing through development and entering production. The movie was originally scheduled to shoot in June 2023, though it had to be delayed due to the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that summer. However, even after the strikes have ended, the Community movie has struggled to make progress, partially due to the limited availability of its cast.

The Community movie has had a tumultuous and somewhat confusing development process but has received several recent positive updates.
Dan Harmon’s script itself for the Community movie also took longer than expected. In February 2024, Donald Glover said that the script was finished, but later that month, Harmon backtracked and said that the script was actually “almost done.” Ken Jeong’s comments, coming nine months later, seemingly confirm that the script is finally finished, and while a plan is in place, there is still no clear timetable for when production will begin.
They Present A Mixed Bag
While Ken Jeong’s confirmation that the script is finished and a plan is in place is a positive update, the fact that there is still no clear timetable to start production is not a reassuring sign. While Harmon’s script is seemingly finished, the Community cast’s schedule needs to align before filming can begin. Though Jeong’s comments offer another positive update, there are still several challenges that lie ahead before Community: The Movie can begin filming, and finally become a reality.
