Love Hurts’ Troubles Aren’t That Concerning For Ke Huy Quan Thanks To This Guaranteed 2025 Box Office Hit

In February 2025, Ke Huy Quan starred in Love Hurts, an action romance movie that flopped both financially and critically, yet Quan doesn’t have to worry about this hurting his career because of one upcoming project. In Love Hurts, Quan plays Marvin, an ex-assassin who has left his life of crime behind to become a successful real estate agent. However, when he receives a mysterious letter from his former partner, whom he left for dead, Marvin is plunged back into the world of hit men and violence. Despite its snappy premise and colorful marketing, Love Hurts was poorly received.

The scale of Love Hurts’ disappointing performance can be seen via its box office performance and Rotten Tomatoes scores. On a budget of $18 million, the movie made just $14 million, not even close to breaking even. Arguably even worse, critics gave Love Hurts a brutal 19% on Rotten Tomatoes. Not even the 61% audience score can make up for such a low ranking. It seems that Love Hurts’ failure had to do with poor storytelling and a confusing merging of genres that simply did not pan out.

Zootopia 2 Will More Than Make Up For How Disappointing Love Hurts Was For Ke Huy Quan

Zootopia’s Past Success Explained

Although Love Hurts’ bad reviews are painful for all those involved, including Quan, the lead actor has an upcoming project that can easily eclipse this failure: Zootopia 2. Nine years after the premiere of Zootopia, Disney is back with a sequel, which will see the return of Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps as they track down a mysterious snake. The voice actor behind this snake is none other than Quan. Based on the success of Zootopia in 2016, there is little doubt that the sequel will make up for Quan’s early 2025 disappointment.

Why Love Hurts’ Reviews Are So Bad: What Went Wrong With Ke Huy Quan’s 19% Movie On Rotten Tomatoes

Ke Huy Quan’s new action movie, Love Hurts, looked quite promising prior to its release, but now, the movie is struggling with shockingly bad reviews.

Disney is known for their successful animated features, but Zootopia is a particularly strong entry for the company. With a budget of $150 million, the movie grossed over $1 billion. Among the highest-grossing animated movies of all time, Zootopia ranks 14th. Furthermore, Zootopia has great ratings from both critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a Certified Fresh 98% from critics and a 92% from audiences. While there is certainly a chance that Zootopia 2 won’t meet expectations, it seems more likely that the movie will follow in its predecessor’s footsteps.

Zootopia 2 Could Destroy A Ke Huy Quan Box Office Record He Set Last Year

Quan Has 1 More Exciting 2025 Release

Han with a fist raised in Kung Fu Panda 4

Another positive about Zootopia 2 is that it could break a record for Quan. In 2024, Quan appeared in Dreamworks’ Kung Fu Panda 4, which became his highest-grossing movie of all time, with $547 million. This is certainly a lot of money, but based on Zootopia’s earnings in 2016, Zootopia 2 could blow Kung Fu Panda 4 out of the water. For the first time ever, Quan could be part of a movie that breaks the $1 billion ceiling. This would more than make up for Love Hurts’ rough premiere.

One more piece of good news: Zootopia 2 isn’t the only exciting project coming up for Quan in 2025. The actor has one more upcoming project this year, which is Netflix’s The Electric State. This sci-fi movie adaptation is based on an illustrated novel of the same name, and will see Quan alongside other huge stars like Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Woody Harrelson, Colman Domingo, and more. Ultimately, Love Hurts will be nothing but a bump in the road for Quan by the end of 2025.
