John Nania, Sebastian Stan’s stunt double, has revealed Mark Hamill wants Stan as a recast Luke Skywalker in Star Wars. Lucasfilm has always been wary of recasting characters, blaming the Han Solo recast on Solo: A Star Wars Story‘s box office failure. The debate on recasting legacy actors has recently resurfaced, though, after Andor recast the character of Bail Organa due to original actor Jimmy Smits not being available.
Now, Sebastian Stan stunt double John Nania has told Cantina Talk that Mark Hamill himself supports a popular recast – that Stan would be a great young Luke Skywalker. Hamill has discussed the idea with Stan, and he apparently loves the idea; Stan himself is wary of taking over while the classic actor is still in role. As Nania explained when asked about the idea of this recast:
“Do you know how many conversations he and I have had about this? Literally there was a moment that I’m, like, I’m sure you’ve seen the picture of you as Luke Skywalker. He then told me… Mark and I have actually talked about this. Not anything official on Disney’s level of Star Wars, but I guess Mark Hamill’s been, like, he’s a fantastic actor, let him do it. But then Sebastian being as awesome as he is, he’s like, Mark is still doing the job. I don’t wanna take the job from him and he’s still working, you’re not gonna beat the original.
But then this other side to it is, like, they’re not calling. I hear it, I’d love to do it.”
