Nosferatu has already made its way onto an elite 2024 horror list. Nosferatu is a dark fantasy retelling of the classic vampire story of the same name and the fourth film from Robert Eggers, who previously helmed The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman. It released on Christmas Day among a competitive field that included Babygirl and A Complete Unknown. Nosferatu features a strong leading cast including Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, and Simon McBurney. It is getting strong reviews so far and is in conversation for awards season.
As per The Numbers, Nosferatu has now made its way up to an elite spot among 2024 horror. In just five days, Nosferatu has made it onto the top 10 highest-grossing horror films of the year at the domestic box office, and is just outside the top 5. At the time of writing, the movie is currently the no. 6 highest-grossing horror film of the year, grossing $40.3 million domestically. It beat out movies such as Speak No Evil and The Strangers: Chapter 1 for this honor, but still sits behind Terrifier 3 and more.
What This Means For Nosferatu
The Movie Is Likely To Beat Out Other Horror Films
Nosferatu is the last major horror release of 2024, which means that it is almost guaranteed a spot in the eventual top 5. It is just over $13 million behind Terrifier 3, and while a sizable gap, it is one that it will almost certainly cross as it enters its first full week in theaters. In addition to Terrifier 3, Nosferatu currently sits behind Smile 2, Longlegs, Alien: Romulus, and A Quiet Place: Day One in terms of domestic totals.

Robert Eggers’ 2024 gothic horror movie sees an ancient vampiric evil curse curse a young woman and her loved ones in 1830s Germany.
Nosferatu‘s $21.1 million opening was relatively comparable to the openings of both Longlegs and Smile 2, and higher than that of Terrifier 3. This start is a good sign, as it means that the film has a good shot at surpassing these box office list competitors. Even though the gaps between Nosferatu and Smile 2 and Longlegs are still sizable in profit, both its predecessors faced more box office competition in the genre at the time of their release. Nosferatu is a more unique title right now, making it easier for it to ascend at the box office.
Our Take On Nosferatu’s Success
Nosferatu Is Great For Eggers
In addition to being an achievement for 2024 horror, Nosferatu is already a big deal for director Eggers. The film has already seen the filmmaker’s biggest opening weekend by far, beating out The Northman by almost $8 million. It needs just over $26 million to beat The Northman‘s overall gross, a feat that, while great, could be achievable. As such, Nosferatu seems on its way to become a box office hit for Eggers.
