Images for Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare offer a first look at the horror version of Tinkerbell (Kit Green) and Captain Hook (Charity Kase). Written and directed by Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey director Scott Chambers, the upcoming horror retelling of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan is a new entry in the Twisted Childhood Universe, only in theaters from January 13 to 15. The official synopsis sees Wendy Darling (Megan Placito) attempt to rescue her brother Michael (Peter DeSouza-Feighoney) from an evil Peter Pan’s (Martin Portlock) plot to send him to Neverland.
The first images of Captain Hook and Tinkerbell (via Jagged Edge Productions and ITN Studios) offer a terrifying look at the villains of Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare. First, the images unveil the character design of the highly anticipated Captain Hook, who has transformed into a semi-monstrous figure with pale and rotten skin that resembles the crew of the Flying Dutchman in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
In her journey to rescue Michael, Wendy comes across Tinkerbell, a fairy addicted to “what she thinks is fairy dust.” Tinkerbell is a troubled character who appears to be Peter Pan’s accomplice. The first-look images hint at a twisted dynamic between Peter and Tinkerbell, with one showing the fairy in emotional distress in a scene with Peter. Check out the images:

Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare Has A Tragic Undertone
The official trailer for Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare reveals a murderous plot, in which Peter Pan becomes a Pennywise-like abductor who attempts to kidnap children and send them to Neverland, with Tinkerbell being his sidekick. It’s unknown what role Captain Hook plays in the movie. As he is traditionally a nemesis of Peter Pan, there is a chance the captain might be on the other team, even potentially on Wendy’s side. However, his villainous appearance in the images seems to suggest otherwise.

The latest installment in the TCU, Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, offers some stylish direction and a few good performances, but not enough fun.
Tink and Pan’s dynamic appears to be toxic and abusive, especially with Tink misusing fairy dust. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Chambers revealed the origin of this dynamic stems from one of the most unsettling horror movies of the 2010s, Hounds of Love, in which a twisted suburban couple abduct a teenage girl to keep her in captivity. The director explained that there was “a lot of manipulation between that couple” that he brought into the story of Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare. It seems Tinkerbell might be pushed by Peter to do these horrible things, making her more of an unwilling participant than an active villain.

There’s No Fairy Dust In Neverland Nightmare
There’s a lot more going on in the twisted story of Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare. For a fairytale that usually involves magic, there’s no magic in Scott’s distorted retelling, which explains Captain Hook’s monstrous but human-like transformation and why Tinkerbell looks like a vulnerable middle-aged woman who doesn’t have wings to fly with. All the tales are fake, but the blood is real. Peter Pan is a murderer, and Tinkerbell is another one of his victims.
With that being said, Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare is a lot darker than most would expect from the character. Though there have been villanious twists on Peter Pan before, perhaps most notably on ABC’s Once Upon a Time, this is definitely the most unsettling and scarily realistic version yet, making him the perfect addition to Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey‘s world. With this movie, expect a far more horrifying dynamic between the characters audiences know so well.
