Sigourney Weaver Reveals More About Her New Star Wars Character, Hints At Major Changes For Grogu

Following her Star Wars Celebration 2025 panel about The Mandalorian and Grogu, one of the most highly anticipated upcoming Star Wars movies, Sigourney Weaver has provided brand-new insight into her Star Wars character. The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the next Star Wars movie, with a May 22, 2026, release date—in fact, this will be Star Wars’ first movie in nearly 7 years when it is released. No doubt for that reason, there have been several Star Wars Celebration reveals about The Mandalorian and Grogu, including confirmation of Sigourney Weaver’s Star Wars character.

Following that Star Wars Celebration panel, IGN released an interview with Sigourney Weaver, which shed even more light upon her currently unnamed character in The Mandalorian and Grogu. In that interview, Weaver shared:

“Well, she was wearing a rebel pilot uniform, and that’s how she came up. And now, of course, she’s still a pilot and is one of the people working to protect the New Republic. She’s actually out in the Outer Rim where there are vestiges of the Empire, so she needs someone like the Mandalorian and his faithful companion.”

Later in the interview, Weaver added:

“I feel like Grogu was sort of transitioning from a little learning creature to someone who has real skills. And indeed, he is the apprentice now, and I felt that I could see a big difference between that in the series.”

While The Mandalorian and Grogu’s story and Weaver’s role in the movie (unsurprisingly) remain tightly under wraps at present, these comments from Weaver have some fascinating implications for this new Star Wars character.

Grogu’s Journey Seems To Be Continuing – With A New Ally

Weaver’s Comments Suggest Her Character And Grogu Are Closely Linked

Given Weaver’s comments, which reflect a clear level of familiarity with Grogu’s arc both before The Mandalorian and Grogu and in the movie itself, it seems Weaver’s character and Grogu may have a significant connection. In fact, The Mandalorian season 3 ending, combined with Weaver’s interview, suggests what that may entail. During The Mandalorian finale, Din Djarin agreed to work with the New Republic, and, as he is now Din’s official Mandalorian apprentice, Grogu will of course be tagging along.

Evidently, Weaver’s character was once a Rebel pilot, but, in The Mandalorian and Grogu, she will be working to defend the New Republic. It seems safe to assume, then, that Weaver’s currently unidentified character will be an ally to Grogu and Din Djarin in the new movie. This is particularly interesting because Weaver referenced Imperial Remnants, which heavily hints that Din Djarin and Grogu will become enmeshed in this ongoing battle to truly squash the Empire (including its sympathizers).

Could Weaver Actually Become A Returning Character?

In addition to these interesting implications for Grogu’s story in The Mandalorian and Grogu, Weaver’s comments to IGN suggest that she could have a much more considerable arc of her own in Star Wars movies and TV shows. Particularly her character’s involvement with stopping the Imperial Remnant could mean a link between this character and Ahsoka season 2, in addition to Dave Filoni’s currently untitled Mandalorian movie.

After all, we know that there will be a throughline connecting The Mandalorian and Grogu, Ahsoka season 2, and Filoni’s Mandalorian movie, presumably directly related to this tension around Imperial sympathizers. Based on this, Sigourney Weaver’s character may very well become a returning character in Star Wars projects set in this era. That remains to be seen, but Sigourney Weaver’s recent comments about The Mandalorian and Grogu both in this interview and at Star Wars Celebration have me more excited than ever about her involvement.
