The Account 3 Release Timeline Addressed By Director After 8-Year Wait For Sequel

The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor addresses the release window for The Accountant 3. The Accountant was released in 2016 and starred Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Jon Bernthal, J.K. Simmons, and John Lithgow. Despite being a box office success – grossing $155 million against a production budget of $44 million – there was an eight-year gap until the sequel. The Accountant 2‘s main cast mostly returned from the original movie, and the film will release in the U.S. on April 25, with hopes that a third movie will follow soon after.

In an interview with ScreenRant at SXSW, O’Connor revealed that the plans for a third movie are currently underway, and that there will not be an eight-year gap between The Accountant 2 and The Accountant 3. He also talked about the decision to style the title cards for the second movie in a particular way, and hinted that this theme could continue for the third movie. Check out O’Connor’s comments below:

Yeah, that was important to me and I was very happy that Amazon embraced that. We were always calling it Account Square. It won’t take eight years.

What This Means For The Accountant 3’s Release Prospects

If Accountant 2 Is A Success, Then 3 Should Get A Faster Release

The Accountant was something of an unexpected hit, with a strong story, thrilling action, and a captivating central performance from Affleck. The fact that many of the same people have returned for The Accountant 2 should bode well for the film’s chances. If The Accountant 2 can be a success after the film releases in theaters this spring, there is a good chance that the third movie will be released within a couple of years, provided the schedule of its stars will allow for that.

Although The Accountant 2 was first announced back in 2017, the movie did not enter development until 2024. There is unlikely to be such a gap for The Accountant 3. O’Connor’s comments also confirm that he does not plan to wait that long, and he might even have the idea for the film in mind already. The eight-year gap could have been down to scheduling conflicts and budgetary constraints, but with Amazon acquiring distribution rights, The Accountant 3 could arrive sooner than planned.

The Movie Could Be Released Within a Year or Two

The Accountant received mixed reviews critically, but was a hit with audiences, and The Accountant 2 looks set to follow in the same footsteps, but the movie could also enjoy a strong stint on streaming as well. The fact that Amazon is now involved could help expedite the development process for The Accountant 3, and will not necessitate the need for a theatrical release. This is something that could make the movie an even more successful entry in The Accountant franchise.
