Tom Cruise Hypes Upcoming Movie With Two-Time Oscar-Winning Director After Completing Filming

Tom Cruise is hyping up his next movie, which will be helmed by an Oscar-winning director. Cruise has been working in the industry for decades, and has garnered both critical and commercial support during that time. This year, his biggest project is Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which comes out in theaters May 23. Last year, the actor signed a deal with Warner Bros. that would see him make more movies with them. As such, the actor-producer has several major projects coming down the pike even after this year.

Speaking on Today, Cruise hypes up his upcoming film with The Revenant director Alejandro Iñárritu. The actor first provided a status update, wherein he mentioned that he had “just finished” his work on the director’s film. He then spoke highly of the process, calling it “an extraordinary experience.” Check out the full quote from Cruise below:

“I just finished a film with Alejandro Iñárritu too, who did The Revenant, and we’ll be coming out with that. That was an extraordinary experience and [Christopher McQuarrie] and I are always working on several different films.”

What Tom Cruise’s Update Means For The Iñárritu Movie

The Film Was Announced Early Last Year

This Iñárritu movie does not yet have a title, but it was announced in February 2024. As Cruise mentions, Iñárritu is the Oscar-winning director behind The Revenant as well as Birdman. The film’s full plot details have not yet been revealed, but it is reportedly about an action comedy wherein the most powerful man in the world causes a major disaster and then has to prove that he is actually humanity’s savior. In addition to Cruise, the film features a leading cast including Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Emma D’Arcy, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde, and Sandra Hüller.

Across his illustrious career, Tom Cruise has proved his skill as a dramatic actor and talents as far more than just an action movie star.

Cruise’s announcement about the movie did not include a release date reveal, but the film’s completion is nonetheless a step in the right direction for the film. After having a high-profile release this year, it would be in Cruise’s interest to continue that momentum into 2026. Early reports say the film is scheduled for release on October 2, 2026. Assuming post-production follows quickly after filming, it would be reasonable for the Iñárritu film to meet this timeline.

This Could Be A Good Career Pivot For Cruise

Tom Cruise looking ahead in Magnolia

While Cruise could make this film a blockbuster hit, this Iñárritu movie will be an interesting way for the actor to transition back to working with more auteur filmmakers. Cruise has done this before, collaborating with the likes of directors Paul Thomas Anderson on Magnolia and Stanley Kubrick on Eyes Wide Shut. Recent years, however, have seen the A-lister focus much more heavily on popcorn movies. Even though some of said films, like Top Gun: Maverick, have been well-received, working with Iñárritu will be a way for Tom Cruise to restore part of his past career trends.
