In advance of its wide release this weekend, the Rotten Tomatoes score has been revealed for Until Dawn. The film has fallen on the “rotten” side of the spectrum, scoring a 50% Tomatometer. This score is subject to change, as there are only 20 reviews in so far. Similarly, the film does not yet have an audience score.
What This Means For Until Dawn
Video Game Adaptations Are Popular Right Now
Though its 47% score meant that the movie had a lot of detractors, not everyone disliked the film. In her Until Dawn review, ScreenRant‘s Mary Kassel gave the movie 8 out of 10 stars, writing “the production design is a highlight, fully immersing us in this nightmarish world and expanding naturally.” Kassel also praised the movie for not taking itself too seriously, and ultimately found the ending satisfying. With this review in mind, it is important to understand that critics have fallen on both ends of the spectrum with Until Dawn, leading to this mixed Rotten Tomatoes score.
As Kassel’s review points out, video game adaptations have grown increasingly popular Most recently, theatrical audiences saw the release of A Minecraft Movie. Though this film has also gotten mixed reviews, it has been a huge box office success. Until Dawn is also not helped by the fact that The Last of Us season 2 is currently releasing episodes weekly on HBO. While this installment comes from a more controversial game, The Last of Us: Part II, the season is getting strong reviews overall, scoring a 95% Tomatometer. By comparison, Until Dawn‘s reception is far more lackluster.
Our Take On The Until Dawn Rotten Tomatoes Score
The Filmmakers Had A Hard Task
The Until Dawn game is really well-liked and pretty iconic in the video game community, giving the movie big shoes to fill. Whereas something like The Last of Us is more focused on narrative than complex gameplay in the first place, director David S. Sandberg and the rest of the Until Dawn team had to adapt a game wherein the player’s actions are critical to the story’s progression. Ultimately, video game fans will be the best judges of this film as it releases widely in theaters this weekend.
