After Working on Gundam, Evangelion’s Creator Is Already Eyeing 5 New Projects

Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno might be busy with Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, but he already has plenty of new projects under his belt. In late 2024, it was announced that not only would the new Gundam anime be a collaboration with Studio Khara, but that Hideaki Anno, himself, would be involved in production, marking his first time working on an anime since finishing Rebuild of Evangelion in 2021.

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX is Hideaki Anno’s biggest project to date, but fans shouldn’t expect him to slow down anytime soon. In a recent report from Studio Khara, not only was it revealed that Anno had been working on GQuuuuuuX since 2018 alongside the final Rebuild of Evangelion film, but surprisingly, according to Studio Khara, Hideaki Anno already has at least five new projects he’s currently working on. Few directors are as renowned as Hideaki Anno, and if his new projects are anything like Neon Genesis Evangelion or the new Gundam anime, they’ll be great to see.

What Could Hideaki Anno’s Next Project Be?

What Else Is In Store For Evangelion’s Creator?

With Hideaki Anno working on at least five new projects, that, of course, invites speculation on what they might be. Not only is Studio Khara involved with the upcoming Space Battleship Yamato movie, but Anno has previously stated that he’s open to Neon Genesis Evangelion continuing under someone else’s direction, and one of the scripts could be him contributing to that as a writer or in an advisory role. Whatever the case, there are plenty of new anime projects Hideaki Anno and Studio Khara could be contributing to, and anything new from them could be great to see.

Of course, there’s no saying that Hideaki Anno’s next projects have to be in animation. Besides Evangelion, Studio Khara is known for making the Shin Japan Heroes Universe, a series of dark remakes of classic tokusatsu shows and movies, and with how passionate Anno has been about them, Hideaki Anno’s next projects could easily be new entries into the Shin Japan Heroes Universe. Anno’s initial statement even says he’d have six projects if his proposed sequel to Shin Kamen Rider finally gets greenlit, and even if someone prefers his work in animation, it would still be great to see.

Why Hideaki Anno Still Working Is Great To See

What Makes Hideaki Anno Such A Great Creator

Above all else, Hideaki Anno having new projects in development is exciting simply because of how great a creator he is. When it comes to animation, Anno has always been one of the best in the business for the fluidity and all-around gorgeous nature of his projects, and as Rebuild of Evangelion shows, his style has only gotten better with age. Hideaki Anno’s incredible animation craft makes any new project from him something to look forward to, and any of the five he’s working on will be great to see because of it.

More than that, though, is his skill as a writer. Whether it’s in animation or in live-action, Anno excels at writing dark and thoughtful stories about the importance of humanity and forming connections with other people, so above all else, Hideaki Anno working on new projects is great because it means fans will have more chances to experience his phenomenal writing style. Anyone who’s seen Hideaki Anno’s work with Neon Genesis Evangelion or is planning to see his work with Gundam should have no doubts about his ability, and getting anything else like that will be well worth the wait.
