American Primeval Spinoff Chances Get Surprising Update From Director, Including Which Character It’d Focus On

This article contains major spoilers for American Primeval

American Primeval creator and director Peter Berg gives a surprising update on the chances of a spinoff. American Primeval has quickly established itself as a hit since it premiered in early January. The ultra-violent Western consists of six episodes, with The Revenant‘s Mark L. Smith writing the script. It takes place in 1857 during the Utah War, focusing on the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Isaac (Friday Night Lights actor Taylor Kitsch) and Sara (GLOW‘s Betty Gilpin) are at the center of the story, as their journeys anchor the surrounding chaos.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Berg responded to the idea that Isaac would be a solid choice as the focus of a prequel. Berg, who is known for directing films such as Patriots Day and Friday Night Lights, reveals that there are talks underway about an American Primeval spinoff and that it would be an approach they would choose to take:

We’re talking about it right now. Good pick. That’s the way we’d go if we do it, and I don’t know if we will, but that would be the way we would go.

It Could Continue The Story Without Any Hiccups

In the same interview, Berg was asked about the chances of season 2. The series creator explains that the issue with following American Primeval characters like Sara and Devin is that Preston Mota and Shawnee Pourier, the actors who played Devin and Two Moons, are growing out of their current roles, so it would require a time jump to get the story going. However, Berg mentions that he’s interested in the idea of looking backward.

American Primeval Season 2 Update Risks Making A Mistake With Netflix’s Epic Western

Netflix’s epic period Western miniseries American Primeval could be making a big mistake if it decides to move forward with a potential second season.

From a narrative perspective, it would make sense to bring back Sara. The finale of American Primeval sees Isaac sacrifice himself to save Sara, who then heads to California to begin a new life with her son Devin and the young girl Two Moons. A spinoff or a second season that would split time between Sara’s present and Isaac’s past could be the way to go. The Western’s early viewership success points to the possibility of a continuation.

Berg’s series found initial success on Netflix, topping the charts globally in its first week. If that momentum continues to build, then there will likely be more follow-ups and conversations about what the future of American Primeval could look like. That’s especially true because the Western genre has seen a revitalization thanks to Yellowstone. Due to its depictions of death and grim surroundings, this new series is very much its own thing.
