Ariana & Rebecca’s Landman Episode 8 Settlement Stand-Off & How It Will Impact Her And Cooper Explained By Star

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Landman episode 8!Landman star Paulina Chávez has explained Ariana (Chávez) and Rebecca’s (Kayla Wallace) episode 8 settlement stand-off, and what it means for her and Cooper’s (Jacob Lofland) future. The start of Landman episode 8 saw Rebecca and Nathan (Colm Feore) trying to get Ariana to take money for her husband’s death in episode 1, asking her to sign a document saying she can’t sue the oil company for wrongful death. However, Cooper intervenes, demanding $1 million per family, resulting in a standoff between her and Rebecca that ends with a massive check getting written.

Speaking with ScreenRant about the big moment, Chávez explained how Rebecca was hoping for a quick, easy signature from Ariana because of her lack of knowledge of the legal system. However, the actor also believes part of her admires the lawyer for her tenacity, despite Cooper getting the upper hand. As for the $1 million check, she remains quiet about what the money means for her family, but implies the former worm will be involved. Check out what Chávez had to say below:

Oh, my goodness, doing that scene, I feel like I was just observing everybody throughout that scene, especially Kayla, who plays Rebecca. She’s incredible, and definitely everything that was coming out of her mouth, I was just like, “Oh my god, what is happening? You guys!” So, yeah, there’s definitely that tension, I feel like, from day 1, from episode 6, when they first meet Ariana, it’s just like, “Who is this person trying to get us to sign these papers without really any information?” If you’ve ever read a contract, there’s a lot of things that do not make any sense in contracts. Every time I sign a contract, I’m like, “What does this mean,” and “What does that mean?” and, like, “What is the loophole in this?” But, yeah, I think it’s something that is very interesting in the power dynamic that she’s trying to use against Ariana, because she obviously doesn’t know anything about the legal system. It was a fun scene, though, to shoot, and especially watching Kayla. She’s amazing, incredible. I feel like in Ariana’s head, though, there’s some part of her that is absolutely admired by this young woman who is so powerful and knows what she’s talking about. There’s just a little bit in the face of how evil it is, like, “D–n, she’s a bada–.”

You’re just gonna have to wait and watch the show to see. [Laughs] Obviously, $1 million is a lot of money, life-changing money, so it’s exciting to see how that helps the characters and how they end up flourishing because of it.

Meanwhile, Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton) visits them to assess how genuine their relationship really is, with snarky remarks getting him kicked out by Ariana. However, he also realizes how true their feelings for one another are, and that his son was simply trying to help her by fighting with Rebecca over the settlement payout.

Even before the settlement check became $1 million, Rebecca said the original amount being offered would be enough to pay off Ariana’s house and send her child through college. With so much extra money, it’s possible the couple will end up chasing Cooper’s dream of owning an oil company, using whatever funds are left over to begin formulating his dream. Since he quit his job, he’d need to set out on his own, something Landman established as likely given how much he wants to provide Ariana with a stable future.
