The Adolescence trailer reveals Boiling Point star Stephen Graham and director Philip Barantini reuniting for Netflix’s new one-shot series. The actor and director originally collaborated on the 2021 one-shot film starring Graham as the head chef of a London restaurant. They reunited for a 2023 TV series that acted as a continuation of the film, with Graham reprising his role as Chef Andy Jones and Barantini returning as director. Now, the two have reunited once again for a new one-shot series coming to Netflix.
Today, Netflix unveiled the first official trailer for Adolescence, starring Stephen Graham as the father of a 13-year-old son, Jamie (Owen Cooper), who is arrested for the murder of a girl he goes to school with. Afterward, the alleged crime leaves his father, Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe (Ashley Walters), and the clinical psychologist assigned to his case, Briony Ariston (Erin Doherty), all searching for answers. What The Adolescence Trailer Means For The Show
It Continues Boiling Point’s One-Shot Technique
Boiling Point originated as a 2019 short film, also directed by Philip Barantini and starring Stephen Graham, before it was later expanded into the 2021 one-shot film. The feature film follows Graham as Chef Andy Jones in real time through a hectic hour and a half in his London restaurant on the busiest day of the year. Boiling Point was continued with a four-episode miniseries, though it didn’t use the same one-shot technique.

However, Graham and Barantini’s upcoming Netflix series, Adolescence, will incorporate the same one-shot technique that Boiling Point did. Consisting of four total parts, each episode of Adolescence was filmed in one continuous shot and, as a result, will unfold in real time. In addition to starring, Graham co-created the series alongside Jack Thorne with Faye Marsay, Christine Tremarco, Mark Stanley, Jo Hartley, and Amélie Pease also starring, and Brad Pitt’s Plan B among the producers.
Our Take On The Adolescence Trailer
It Looks As Intense As Boiling Point
As a massive fan of FX’s culinary drama The Bear, I was compelled to watch Boiling Point and was blown away by its one-shot technique, which really helps capture the relentless pressure and intensity of a restaurant kitchen. I was later delighted to learn the story was continued with a 2023 miniseries, which doesn’t incorporate the one-shot approach, but does continue its exploration of dark themes such as drug abuse and self-harm.
Graham and Barantini’s new Netflix series Adolescence looks intriguing since it uses the same one-shot technique as Boiling Point. Unlike movies like Birdman and 1917, which are filmed using long takes that are stitched together, Boiling Point and Adolescence were actually filmed in one continuous take, which is a much more impressive feat. When done well, it’s not just a gimmick, but can greatly enhance the intensity of the material, whether it’s a restaurant kitchen or a teenage boy accused of murdering one of his classmates.
Adolescence is expected to be released on March 13.
