Born Again Showrunner Addresses That Punisher Post-Credits Scene And Whether Jon Bernthal Will Return In Season 2

Showrunner Dario Scardapane reveals what Daredevil: Born Again‘s post-credits scene means for the MCU future of Jon Bernthal’s Punisher. After Mayor Wilson Fisk successfully executes his plans to take over the city’s streets illegally using a city-wide blackout in the Daredevil: Born Again season 1 finale, Frank Castle escapes Fisk’s illegal prison in Daredevil: Born Again‘s post-credits scene. Frank Castle’s escape attempt could be taken as a set-up for the Punisher’s own MCU spinoff, which will be a Special Presentation instead of a full-length series.

In an interview with EW, Daredevil: Born Again showrunner Dario Scardapane explains that Frank Castle’s escape attempt wasn’t intended to be a tease for a Punisher spinoff. According to Scardapane, the principal intention behind Daredevil: Born Again‘s post-credits scene was to confirm that “Frank is not going to stay locked up for long.” Read Scardapane’s full comments below:

“No, it was part of a larger Marvel idea with regards to Jon, the Punisher, and keeping him in the world. He gets taken by the task force, and we didn’t want to just have him sit on that island. We needed to give you an idea that Frank is not going to stay locked up for long. It came pretty late in the process, but it became very clear very quickly that this was the thing to do both in terms of telling the story of Daredevil and what’s going to come next for Frank and the Punisher.”

When asked whether Daredevil: Born Again‘s post-credits scene could be read as confirmation that Jon Bernthal’s Punisher will return in Daredevil: Born Again season 2, Dario Scardapane answers that the scene “lays right into” Marvel Studios’ Punisher Special Presentation. However, Scardapane doesn’t provide any specific information about the Punisher’s spinoff. The Daredevil: Born Again showrunner says:

“I don’t know. I mean, I think that a lot of what would be fair to assume for an audience member is that post-credit sequence lays right into what the Punisher special is going to be.”

The Punisher’s Special Presentation Will Build Upon Daredevil: Born Again’s Post-Credits Scene

Dario Scardapane makes it clear that Daredevil: Born Again season 1’s post-credits scene wasn’t made with the idea of a Special Presentation spinoff in mind, but rather Frank Castle’s natural instincts to fight back against Wilson Fisk. However, Daredevil: Born Again season 1’s post-credits tease serves as a perfect launchpad for the next chapter in Frank Castle’s MCU story. After escaping, Frank Castle could break Swordsman out of his cage and team up with him in his spinoff, or he could simply go on his own. Either way, Frank Castle could do a lot of damage to Fisk’s administration without having to be part of Daredevil’s rebellion army in Daredevil: Born Again season 2.

Okay Marvel, I Think I Know Which Daredevil: Born Again Character Is Being Set Up As The Punisher Spinoff’s Villain

I think I’ve figured out which Dardevil: Born Again character would be the perfect rival for Frank Castle in the upcoming Punisher MCU special.

Since Dario Scardapane and the team behind Daredevil: Born Again don’t appear to be directly involved in setting up the Punisher’s Special Presentation, all the story details about Frank Castle’s spinoff are currently a secret, and they could go down several different paths. The Punisher’s spinoff might make Frank Castle unavailable for Daredevil: Born Again‘s story, or they could become required watching in the overarching storyline established by Daredevil’s series.

After Daredevil: Born Again season 1 gave Matt Murdock and Frank Castle’s complex friendship its fair time in the spotlight, Daredevil: Born Again season 2 may focus on a different set of supporting characters. In season 2, Daredevil may team up with other street-level heroes such as Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Danny Rand, as well as any other MCU heroes who may want to help New York’s vigilantes rebel against Mayor Fisk. Frank Castle could return as well, but the bulk of the Punisher’s screentime may be reserved for his Special Presentation spinoff in the near future.
