Warning: Spoilers Ahead for NCIS Season 2!
David J. North, co-showrunner of NCIS: Origins, recently addressed the possibility of Caitlin Todd’s return to the franchise. NCIS: Origins follows a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs in 1991, before the events of NCIS, as he begins his career as a newly minted special agent at the NCIS Camp Pendleton office, where he joins a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks. Caitlin Todd, portrayed by Sasha Alexander, played a significant role in the early seasons of NCIS before her tragic exit in season 2’s finale.
During a ScreenRant with North and co-showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal, it was confirmed that there have been no formal discussions about Caitlin’s return to NCIS: Origins. However, North indicated that he wouldn’t rule out the possibility entirely. He emphasized that if the right story comes along, there might be room to revisit her character. Check out North’s comments below:
To my knowledge, I believe when I’ve been in there, it’s not come up, but I worked with Sasha [Alexander], who played Kate Todd in the early years of NCIS. I actually worked with her on Rizzoli & Isles too. I’m a huge fan of her and a huge fan of that character. So again, we never say never on anything. If the right idea comes up, maybe there’s something there.
What This Means For Caitlin Todd’s Potential Return to NCIS: Origins
For Now, Caitlin Won’t Come Back For NCIS: Origins
Caitlin was a key member of the original NCIS team until her tragic death in the episode “Twilight” in season 2, which aired 20 years ago. Her character’s unexpected death came while the team was clearing out a terrorist cell, and she had suffered a fatal head wound. For a character like Caitlin Todd, whose exit from NCIS left a lasting impact on both the team and viewers, the possibility of revisiting her is particularly significant since she has not appeared in NCIS: Origins yet. However, there are no plans in motion, as confirmed by North.

NCIS’ Original MCRT Team Members Ranked
From Gibbs to Kate, the original MCRT team members have shaped NCIS, and with more spinoffs on the way, their legacy lives on.
Nonetheless, North’s comments reflect the show’s approach to character returns, emphasizing that they won’t rule anything out if it fits organically within the story. While NCIS: Origins strives to establish its own identity, reintroducing NCIS characters like Caitlin could risk overshadowing the development of newer characters. However, North’s recognition of Sasha Alexander’s contribution to NCIS suggests respect for both the character and the actress. If the right story arises, Caitlin’s return could contribute to NCIS: Origins, but it would need to align with the spinoff’s overall direction.
Our Take On Caitlin Todd’s Possible Return to NCIS: Origins
Caitlin’s Return Is Hopeful, But Not In The Cards
While David J. North made it clear that no plans for Caitlin Todd’s return are currently in the works, his comments point towards his openness to that prospect. If a reunion happens, it will likely depend on the strength and necessity of the plotline and how well it fits into NCIS: Origins. The key takeaway is that NCIS: Origins is taking a measured approach, ensuring any character return adds to the show’s ongoing narrative rather than simply drawing on nostalgia.
