Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Chicago Fire season 13, episode 9!Chicago Fire star Joe Minoso has confirmed Cruz’s fate, while teasing major consequences in the future after season 13, episode 9’s shocking ending. Chicago Fire‘s winter 2025 return saw Cruz being forced to help Junior (Richard Cabral), cousin of gang leader Flaco (José Antonio García) who the firefighter let die during a fire in season 1. Junior tries getting Cruz to help him get money back from Moreno, only for them to get ambushed in a firefight. The result is Junior dead and Cruz with a bullet in his arm, Moreno nowhere to be found.
Speaking with TV Insider, Minoso confirmed there will be consequences for Cruz after Chicago Fire season 13, episode 9’s firefight, and that he’ll be trying to hide the truth from Severide (Taylor Kinney). He confirms episode 10 will take place right afte the shootout, and he begins to plan how to keep what happened under wraps. However, the Lieutenant’s sharp eye means he might not be able to conceal the truth for very long, even as he does everything he can to keep his secret. Check out what Minoso had to say below:
The last thing I think you see in that episode is a man in a car whose mind is completely reeling and you are going to learn something — What I can say is [Episode] 10 is a direct cut from nine where you see Cruz sort of after this ridiculous shootout in this paint shop that almost cost him his life and definitely cost Junior his life… I think the last thing on his mind is Moreno, frankly. I think he’s so just in a state of shock at the events that have just occurred, that his priority quickly becomes, how do I just kind of shove all of this stuff that was in the closet back in the closet as quickly as possible and pretend nothing happened to get back to work?
And that is the worst idea that he could have had because he works with a fire cop. The guy is basically an investigator who cannot stop investigating at his own peril — which is a whole other thing that I love about Taylor. I did not think that Severide would ever sort of become an arson investigator, especially because of all the stuff that happened with his dad [Treat Williams‘ Benny] and how his dad was an investigator and all that. I’m so obsessed with the weird mirroring and daddy issue storyline thing that they’ve done with him and how he can’t help but jump headfirst into this arson investigation stuff. And so, yeah, he’s definitely going to suspect something. It’s going to be up to Cruz to keep that at bay and to make sure that Severide knows nothing, but let’s not forget he’s a fire cop.

He’ll Be Keeping A Major Secret From His Crew
Cruz’s actions stem from his season 1 decision, which saw him leave Flaco for dead in order to save his brother, Leon (Jeff Lima). Chicago Fire season 13 allows this story to come back around full circle, showing how the actions of the past can still have long-standing consequences for characters that have been around since the start. In the firefighter’s case, this wound up getting him into a life-threatening scenario, one that Minoso teases will have a domino effect that lasts throughout the course of the season.

This is especially because of his bullet wound, which he’ll need to think of an excuse for if he wants to keep his connection to Junior a secret. While it’s unclear how the rest of Chicago Fire‘s cast will react to his injury, the team’s leader will probably suspect something is amiss. However, it’s unclear what consequences he’ll face for what transpired, especially if he can be placed at the scene of the firefight.

Although there’s no telling what the consequences for Cruz are going to be, Chicago Fire‘s exploration of the shootout’s aftermath can come from a multitude of angles. This could include the people shooting identifying the firefighter and making a move against him, or it could result in Severide finding out the truth, a confrontation ensuing. With a multitude of different ways the upcoming episodes could play out, the procedural’s focus could be on the aftermath of the unexpected storyline.
